suggestions for a r-09hr replacement
« on: June 16, 2016, 01:13:04 AM »
So my unit has started to get the dreaded sticky-icky
http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=159815.0

i just covered it in gaff tape (since trying to clean it seems to made it worse) so i will be ok for next week's phish show...

but it's probably time to get something new (it started getting a couple of dead lines in the display).

i like the a/d on the unit and was pleased with it's ease of use.  I would be open to getting a r5, but like the idea of a sony m10 too.

only real bummer for me with the sony is the micro sd card (since i have a bunch of full size ones), but for 25 bucks and get a 32GB i think i'll survive.

BUT, i would be interested in other options.
needs to be fairly good as a stealth unit if necessary
comparable a/d as the r09hr (i usually run it behind my sd mp2)
would love to have a wifi/BT capabilities
open to more than 2 channels

thanks for any tips and opinions.

Does it have to be brand new? The Tascam DR2d has served me well and uses the regular SD cards...here is a sample of A-D section driven by M200 Gefell>Aerco MP-2>DR2d

It would be second hand...but, there have been two sold in the Yard Sale this month for $75 and 95 Euro

Isn't the m10 being discontinued?  Better get one while you can.  The battery life is much longer than the 2d.  The m10 is a great recorder.  Micro cards are cheap these days.

Thanks for the reminder.  That does seem to be correct.  B&H has it with some useful parts of the Izotope Suite bundled at no extra cost.  I kind of needed a backup so got mine now.  I had the R-05 but would never go back to that after getting an M-10.

Isn't the m10 being discontinued?

Wasn't that the rumor a few years ago as well?  Has it been substantiated?

If you're interested in more than 2 tracks in a small deck at a reasonable price point, I think the Tascam DR2D and the Zoom H6 might be about it.

The M10 vs. R-05 debate has raged for years and the two are fairly comparable decks - I don't think you can go wrong with either.  I've been happy with the R-05 for the past 4+ years, it stacks up nicely against the R-09HR and has been very reliable.  I've also run my SD MixPre in front of it a number of times and, other than the MixPre's notoriously hot output, have no issues there.  Put a few XLR attenuators on the input of the SD box and it's just fine.

The red m10 shows closeout at adorama.  http://www.adorama.com/SOPCMM10RD.html

Unavailable at musicians friend.  http://www.musiciansfriend.com/portable-field-recorders/sony-pcm-m10-portable-digital-recorder

This is why I suggest buying one if you want one, but I can't say if its discontinued or a stocking issue.

Since you already have a 722 I'd go with the M10.

Main reason is it is a great  >:D deck. Looks close enough to a MP3 player to just stroll into a venue with headphones wrapped around it. Also I LOVE the hold function on it because it prevents buttons from being pushed while still allowing you to set levels. The reason I like this is I can guess at the levels preshow, fire it up before the show starts and just check the levels once the show gets up to normal levels. I've seen people complain because they are afraid the levels will get changed in a pocket. I've never had that issue.

Also makes a great travel recorder. I like running the small rig when I'm flying to shows to reduce baggage. I flew to Vegas for Halloween 2014 with just my carry on. I couldn't have done that with a larger deck.

The Wifi would be nice though. I would be psyched if the "M11" is similar to the M10 with remote control via my phone.

Thanks everyone... i grabbed a m10 after i thought i would just suck it up for MSP but that gaffer tape wrap on the r09hr was really kinda pissing me off.

Seems like it should be suitable replacement... and i guess with amazon, if i don't like it i can return it in 30 days.

thanks for the  >:D tips mike!

now going to read the ts faq and try and get this as idiot proof as i can in 2 days.

can i get a gut check on these settings...

going line in (from my sd mp2)

physical switches:
mic sense = low (probably not effected since line in, but whatevs)
rec level = manual
dpc = off
rec level dial = 6 (what do most people find to be the sweet spot of the unit and having the pre do the rest... if i remember, with the r09hr it was around 22 and the r09 40)

menu settings:
memory = built in (i think i will use this for most 1 night gigs, and the memory card for multi nighters 32GB)
rec = 48/24
LCF = off
DPC = 30% (i think this is a playback only thing... but should i zero it out?)
Effect = Off
Key control = 0
easy search = off

>> detail menu (other than obvious or personal prefs)
Limiter = off
pre rec = on
plug in power = off (again, going line in, not mic in)
cross memory = on (makes sense since the card is in there anyways)
LED = on
Level meter in playback = on

anyone do anything crazy different (other than due to running internals or mic in)??

thanks!

My R09HR also has a dead (well, opposite of dead) line across the screen.  It's old.  Probably close to 10 years.  I considered the Sony but it seems so different.  Though I do like the size.

I've looked at the R05.  Has anyone used the DR-22WL?
