Luntaec V3 - Sonosax SX-M2 Comp with AKG c480b/ck63
« on: February 21, 2011, 03:26:08 PM »
Show: Trey Anastasio  2011-02-20 - The House of Blues, Boston, Ma http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=542634

Song: Gotta Jibboo

Source 1: AKG c480b/ck63(DINa,OTS) > Lunatec V3 Digital > Tascam DR-680 (24/48)

Soutce 2: AKG c480b/ck63(DINa,OTS) > Sonosax SX-M2 > Tascam DR-680 (24/48)

Send Space Link: http://fs08n4.sendspace.com/dl/d52cda812fc65c56c90f65452f843842/4d62c98e1bdcc2c3/ht9mx6/V3-Sonosax-comp01.flac

The recording switches between the sources every 15 seconds...

00-15 = Lunatec V3
15-30 = Sonosax
30-45 = Lunatec V3
45-00 = Sonosax
etc.......

Th V3 digital source is clearly "brighter" and more detailed.  You can really hear it when the sources shift while the horns are playing.  Thanks to Smokin' Joe for the 480/ck63 loaner!

The intent was good but this comp would be far more fair if you ran analog out of the V3.

There's no doubt the V3 A/D is several notches above the stock Tascam, and it's going to be immediately obvious, IMO

Actually the intent is exactly what it was, a comp between the two ways I would run my 480's.  I always run my V3 digital in and I always run my Sonosax Analog in a recorder.  The purpose of this was for me to compare my possible set ups and I figured I would share.  I guess I should have stated that in the begining, but I always love it when people pick apart a comp that is presented on this board.  I would like to try it with the v3 analog also, but I rarely, if ever, run my V3 analog.

Ah, gotcha!  Thought this was a preamp comp and I thought the Sonosax got the short end of the stick with the Tascam A/D (which it does).

The Sax is a great preamp, but I don't think it works very well with the Tascam A/D.  If it were me I'd run the V3 all day long.

There's no doubt the V3 A/D is several notches above the stock Tascam, and it's going to be immediately obvious, IMO

And yet.. In more than one blind comp here, people overwhelmingly preferred the v3 > r09 over the v3's internal a/d.

Also, recent discussion has revealed that the 'sax is particular about power, and the design requires 24 volts (I think that was it) for peak performance.   How'd you juice it?

Can we get two separate files (like a 2 minute segment on each). I find it easier to flip back and forth in Audacity than to have the flips pre-defined. If not, no worries.

While I prefer the soundstage on the sonosax recording, it appears that a bunch of the high end detail is lost when using it.   I too would love to hear a strictly pre-amp comp to see if it's the a/d that's losing the detail....

Agreed.  If I listen and don't watch the clock most of the transitions aren't noticeable.

The V3 source might have a tiny bit more "air".  But that could be a difference between my mics and your mics as much as it preamps or A/D.  It's possible that the old guys who are losing their high end hearing can't hear it as much (for instance I'm 47, I work in a loud factory, and spent a lot of years shooting firearms).

By the way... was this taped behind the SBD at HOB?  It sounds amazingly good.

And you just used a pair of splitters, and had only 1 preamp supplying the +48v Phantom ???

So there is hope for me to go:

Quit messing around with all this other gear talk Bean.  Just get another set of 483's and return to being happy with you gear.   >:D

No splitter, two sets of mics, two preamps > dr680

Joe, yes this was from behind the sbd.

I'm happier w/ my MBHO's than I EVER WAS w/ my 480's. When they come out w/ actives for the ck6x's, I will be getting ck63's ;)

Thanks Ted, I guess I didnt read you OP right.....
