After 10+ years, my Sony 5.1 home theatre/receiver died. I've been on a gear binge lately, so $400ish is the neighborhood I'd like to stay in. I found this one, which seems to have everything I need right now: at least 2 HDMI, optical and coax inputs, multi room. I'd prefer to buy new, but tasty used options will be considered. Thanks in advance!

I don't know much about surround, but you can get a much better deal buying used on sites like Audiogon.
A quick search for $400 surround receivers turned up this gem:

$1500 box for $400. I'm going to guess this is nicer than the Yamaha. When searching for a 2 channel amp the Marantz units were frequently suggested to me.

My neighbor, who does HQ Custom Home Theatre Installs, recommends Yamaha... I like Denon (he doesn't)... His boss pushes Integra (pricey)...

Mike B - thanks for the Audiogon idea, I will keep an eye on it.
Thanks Terry! I only have experience with Yamaha rack effects units, they seemed pretty good, but not user friendly. I've heard mixed things about their home stuff. No experience with Denon, what do you like about them?
Cheers!

My Denon 3808ci has been a work horse for almost 4 yrs now....and I work that bitch!

Also check Raleigh Craigs List... There's always a ton of stuff on there... Audiogon, do a "zip code" search...
I don't have any real exp with Yamaha. Dood just says he gets zero complaints about it, and its inexpensive and works well...
I've owned two Denon products over the years and they've all worked flawlessly, until... The double cassette deck eventually stared giving my issues, and I hardly every needed it anymore so I bagged it... Our Denon AV Receiver got hit by lightning that took out out TV, Cable Box, DVD Player and Denon... It was the AVR-389 and it was very very nice...
I like the fact that it only needed 3 total HDMI cables (DVD>AVR, Cable>AVR, AVR>TV) and it did everything with one push on the remote...

I just bought the next model up -- RX-V571 -- and am very happy with it (for the 3 weeks or so that I've owned it). My previous receiver was also a Yamaha, and at 8+ years old it was still working perfectly until I upgraded last month (because I needed an HDMI-capable unit).

Another happy Yamaha AV amp user...I was a early adopter to HDTV and had a 38" wide format CRT Tube...that bitch was so heavy it once caused me a pinched nerve picking it up...Cable was starting to provide 5.1 Stereo so it needed a AV amp to go with it....
RX-V630 is a 75watt (on mains) 6.1 AV amp...it is 9 years old...In addition to being where I listen to music...it is turned on an running every time anyone in the family room watched TV...the CRT died a year an half ago but...the amp it's still with us and I'm living with Component connections (read NO HDMI) on a 47" Plasma
Now the bad...I have been living with a Yamaha DVD player I bought at the same time...I'll just say that the $39 DVD player I bought for the kids will play DVD's flawlessly that the Yamaha player skips and freezes on....

Thanks guys, I'm still looking. I keep coming back to the Yamaha and this Denon:

Any thoughts on Harmon Kardon? They're more expensive in general, but I don't know if that translates in quality...

We almost replaced our burned out Denon with a 1910, but decided we needed a new minivan...
The CI Line is supposed to be the "Custom" line and may have more features/better build (albeit at a higher price)... And the 1912 offers Networking features...

If you're willing to downsize, here's a 1312: http://raleigh.craigslist.org/ele/2716617294.html

I second the Denon 3808ci - I love mine!

I'm a Denon guy. My AVR-3802 just turned 11 this month and has worked flawlessly. I just ordered an AVR-4810ci to finally replace it.
-
I went with a Denon, but only the 1712. I found a refurb and couldn't resist the price. Thanks for all the input!
