Title: Anything else needed?
Post by: King Crimson on June 19, 2003, 01:43:14 PM
:newbie:

OK, I recently bought AT 853's and I connect them to a MD.  I see alot of people using other things in their rigs and I know I dont need high end things like pre-amps and such but is there anything else that would come in handy for my rig? thanks

A battery box with some sort of bass filter would be helpful if you do not already have one.  Not all pres and ADs are high end.  The deneke AD-20 could improve your sound for not alot of cash.

Yeah, the AD-20 will class up your recordings tenfold. It's a combo pre and a/d, used for about $200-250 or so. Totally get one once your mics are self-powered, man. I speak from experience - I'm still using one!

not too much you can do to beef up the front end of an MD.  You can get crazy, and buy a MME from apogee.  That has a TOS/link out, plus it's a pre amp as well.

I already have the batt box but how do I tell if it has a bass roll off?

I will look into the AD-20

Thanks.

If you open the battery box and it has rolloff, you'll see a handful of little dipswitches which can be adjusted to different levels of rolloff.

When I had the box, I think the dipswitch housing was red, and the dipswitches themselves were white.  Maybe two sets of 4-5 dipswitches, if I recall correctly.

it has roll-off...

here's the break down

i will list the switches that should be down for the particular freq. roll-off

16Hz--2,3,4
69Hz--1,4
95Hz--1,3
107Hz--1,3,4
160Hz--1,2
195Hz--1,2,4
888Hz--1,2,3

that means switches down on both sides, one side for each channel

have you used those mics yet??

No, havent got the chance to yet.  I want to use them for Widespread Panic when they come here, but there are no more tapers tickets for sale so I'm not sure yet.  I have had offers to stub me so I most likely will.

I got free tickets to Blue Oyster Cult with Foghat and Mountain so I will attempt to stealth that show (basically just to get a live version of Mississippi Queen, lol).

Still looking for a stand and bag.

Thanks to all who helped on this.

I still use the 853's for stealthing purposes, and I can honestly say that they pull some pretty nice tapes for the dollar point they represent.  Enjoy!

Do tape BOC!  I have not heard them recently and some of the concert reviews that I have read say that they are playing their best since the 1970s.  I would be most interested in getting a copy of that show if you do tape.
