Ready for Summer Camp!
« on: May 24, 2010, 06:39:13 PM »
Just got done putting this rig together for my stationary cam.  It consists of a Canon HV20 on a  Bogen tripod that can go well over everyone's head along with a RODE SVM and a pair of CA-14 mounted on a DIY PVC DIN 90 setup which will be run into a Zoom H4N.  I also have a portable external monitor that mounts to the legs of my tripod.

The DIY stand needs another quick shot of paint, other than that it's gonna work great.  I also have some longer and shorter sections of PVC in case I need to go lower or taller.

I can't wait to try it out this weekend!

I use a Sony portable DVD player.  Its super nice to have when you have the camera 7'+  I have heavy duty velcro on the backside of it that sticks to my tripod legs.

Here is a list of bands I am panning on filming and recording.

Cornmeal
Umphrey's McGee
Steel Pulse
Victor Wooton
Yonder Mountain String Band
Railroad Earth
Gov't Mule
Split Lip Rayfield
Slightly Stoopid

I am hoping I can hookup with some other folks filming so we can do some multi-cam stuff.  I have 2 HV20's but am only going to be running one at a time.  Maybe I'll be able to find someone there to watch my gear while I run around with a the "B" cam for a couple of those acts.  We'll see...

very nice.

Looks like the mics are mounted to the top of your camera...from experience, if your mics are cardioids you're probably gonna be able to hear the movement to the right and left as you pan your camera.  It's been my experience that when I adjust my mics even a small amount, I can hear the soundstage image shift along with it, so you might want to somehow get the mics mounted directly to the tripod instead of the top of your camera.

I've done plenty of two cam recording on my own and it's an ambitious undertaking for sure!  If you're closer to the stage, it can be manageable because you don't have to run as far because the two cameras aren't as far apart, but if you're back a ways and want to get a stage right and stage left vantage point, the cameras can be miles apart and you're running your ass off all night!  LOL.  It's worth it after the show is over, but during the show, you have to wonder!  Ha!  I think you have the best plan, to get someone else to man the second cam for you.

Also, hope you have plenty of spare batteries and/or power options.

Good luck!

feel free to upload video to the archive's arts and music video section:

Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it’s worth.
