DC in on R44 seems to gave died on me, Help please
« on: June 03, 2011, 03:51:08 PM »
I use an adapter plug and rc batteries for power. it usually just shows the external plug. but it only turns on for aa batteries now. I haven't been able to test with the original cord. what could be wrong and how could I fix this?

I want to say it could be a fuse but this is all speculation on my part.

Ouch Vegeta,

Here is a link to an R44 currently in the YS with a blown DC input just like you describe.  Hope the same thing didn't happen to you, good luck.

http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=145375.0

My guess if it doesn't power with the original power adapter is that it could be a flaky connector switch that switches power modes when you insert a DC plug or more likely a blown protection diode inside the R44.  Either way if at all possible best to try a different external supply if AC is not available.  With luck you may just have a bad power connector.  You know Edirol/Roland require reverse polarity (ie: tip neg./sleeve pos.) from most other devices.  Got a voltmeter handy???  Did TSA take your Zoom, you may need to use it if you can't find enough "AA"batteries for the R44 before the show.

edit to add:

Just read your other recent post where you had duration problems powering R44 with your RC batteries, did that ever get sorted out?  Pitch for Tekkeon MP3450 with reverse polarity plug tip to fit the R44

thanks for the tips, I won't be able to test the stock wall plug until i get home. I emailed oade, and he said he should be able to fix it up, and is probably a fuse or something, but might be another part, lets hope its a fuse

i'm not great with the terminology though

I've also had this issue with mine, it doesn't work with the mains adapter either.

I've added some info to the main R-44 thread, here: http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=123284.msg1894629#msg1894629

Most of the dvd batteries supply positive tip polarity at the post, but the R-44 requires negative tip polarity. When using a battery cable make sure the tip that connects to the R-44 is set to negative (-) if you use the Radio Shack adapta-plug interchangable tips, or you should have a permanant custom cable made. This may be why you cannot accept battery power any more. Unless you accounted for the negative polarity requirements of the R-44 and fed it positive polarity instead, you may have blown a fuse.

I have a custom made Y-cable from Ted Gakidis (tgakidis) Ed @ KindKables (deadheaded) that supplies negative polarity to the R-44 so that you can run two dvd batts together. I don't need mine anymore, so if anyone is looking drop me a pm.

**Edit to correct actual cable maker**

Who can tell me, in twenty words or less, the reason for requiring reverse polarity? Seems absolutely moronic to me as the risks are huge... what could possibly be the benefit?

That said, I do like the R44 and most Edirol recorders.

Reverse engineering, left-handed engineer or knowing folks will forget, plug in standard power and more money for the service centers.

I have only heard of Oade modded ones blowing this fuse. anyone have a stock one blow? i called edirol in WA where these are fixed and talked to the actual warranty repair tech and he said it never has been a issue so....I have 2 r44 and guess which one blew. I called and he was like never heard that happen. I had a friend fix it and it has been fine since. The blown fuse was not polarity related on my end. FWIW i would go BUSMAN if i had it to do over...

If the polarity is wrong when power is connected then the fuse should blow.  It would be pretty easy to unsolder and resolder a new fuse(s) on to this board.  You could probably even get the fuses at RAT shack.

Just to give you an update, mine mysteriously started accepting it again. It could be something to do with the fact it's running off a 14.4V NP-1 battery, which registers about 16.5V when fully charged. There's been a couple of times when it hasn't accepted the battery but this has been the first time it hasn't accepted the mains charger.

Mine's a stock model BTW

I think centre positive and centre negative DC plugs are about as common as each other.  All Roland stuff is centre negative (therefore a lot of guitar FX are)

Attached is a PDF scan from the owners manual "Using External Power Sources" that may help...

Mine was set on 12V. May explain the external PSU not working

Could be.  I can tell you from experience (and from the advice of other people) that if you choose a voltage under the "Ext-Power" setting, it will shut down the deck pretty quickly even if you select the lowest voltage (9v).  When I run my R-44 off an external power source (DVD battery, Tekkeon, etc) I just choose the source in the menu as "Adaptor" and put AA batteries in the deck itself.  That way, the R-44 will just see the external as an unlimited source and, should it run out of juice without me catching it, it will seamlessly switch to the internal batteries and not shut down.
