I took my deck out for use the first time this past weekend. Important lesson I learned: If the power source runs out, the unit will not detect it and write the files before shutting down. Instead, it will shut down and your filles will float off into digital never land. :banging head:

The file size limit for WAV is 4 GB, although many recorders split at 2 GB. As I recall, this is a holdover from older FAT systems. Some recorders, such as the Marantz PMD-620/661 and SD MixPre-3/6 (and the 7-series, I think) and others, allow 4 GB splits...
One way to get longer files without exceeding the 4GB limit is to record in "dual mono" instead of stereo for each track pair. Then each mono file can go over four hours at 24 bit, before it hits the limit and requires a new file...

I find the headphone monitoring level to be quite low - for my old ears anyway.
Does anyone have a simple and easy solution I could try?

Thanks for any thoughts.

I think it's just a weak headphone output, unfortunately.  I have to crank mine when monitoring with my Etymotic in-ears.

Yes, it is a very weak output from the HP out.

I need to keep the headphone out maxed when recording dialogue at -18~-12 to get above ambient noise levels. If I am in a noisy environment I sometimes need to connect the line out to my MixPre and use the HP out from that.

For headphone monitoring, I use this:

https://www.amazon.com/TOPPING-NX2-Ultra-Portable-Amplifier/dp/B00T5I60QQ

It is slim, rechargeable, sounds good and has enough power for field monitoring. I have it Velcro'ed to the top of my recorder with a short mini cable running from "line out" on the 70 to the input of the Topping:

Hi All,

m4granger alerted me that there is a v1.15 firmware update on the Tascam EU site.  This was posted on October 16, 2017, yet the USA site still only shows 1.14.

The release notes do not say anything other than "Operation stability has been improved."

Anyone using the new firmware yet and care to share their experience?

i installed, and the only thing i perceived is a few glitches in the menu when activating phantom power. if you activate and confirm quickly, the screen became a little garbled and it ask twice to confirm phantom power. if you do it slowly, no problem

so, if you are not having problems with 1.14, i suggest you keep it...

Used my Tascam 70D over the weekend and noticed some clips during a few songs....luckily it was just a local band I've recorded many times before.

I re-formattted the SD card that I've used successfully many times before, is there anything else that might lead to this annoyance ?

https://archive.org/details/TheMightyManatees2018-02-16.aud.matrix.flac16

I occasionally click the battery pack button to make sure the signal is strong to the unit (that I position on top of the recorder) but I only did this a few times, and I noticed almost a clip in each song.

any advice, thanks.

Maybe try using an entirely different card?

Yeah probably a good idea, going to splurge on a new one for peace of mind later this week.

Rich - did you use the "official" SD Card Formatter???
