anyone run the AD1000 at 20 bit??
« on: March 02, 2005, 09:35:25 PM »
Hey all-

Been thinking about this the last couple days because I have heard comments from more than one taper that they prefer the sound of the old-school AD1000 to the MMe. Has anyone out there run there AD1000 at 20 bit word length output? One could record this using a lappy with a 24 bit digi interface. I seem to remember that the AD1000 offered ~105 dB dynamic range in its 20 bit mode, which is equivalent to the mini-me spec (also 105 dB).

I was thinking the 20 bit mode might be a good way to wring some more performance from the AD1000, and that it might be interesting to do a comparison of each, both to a lappy at 24 bit, AD1000 set to 20 bit output, MMe at 24 bit. Since the dynamic range spec is the same for both, I would not expect the extra 4 bits of word length to matter, since 20 bit should give you a theoretical 120 dB dynamic range anyway, definitely pushing the limits of almost all pre's and AD's out there. Maybe this doesn't matter to most since AD1K users seem to be getting fewer and fewer as the clocks start to go bad, but this is something that I was curious about... Maybe useful for those of you that are mini-screwdriver impaired.    ;)

Take care,
Ben
