JB3 Question
« on: July 31, 2003, 10:42:43 AM »
Well, my JB3 came in and it looks like a very good unit.  Fairly simple to use, and easy to scroll around in.  I did have a couple of questions though.

First, it appears that the JB3 does not have a level meter?  I think I am correct in that assumption.  If that is true, how do you monitor how hot the level is coming in?

Second, when you are recording optical, does it reduce the decibels from the input source?  I recorded a sample from my computer optically, and the recording is probably at least 3 db lower than the original recording.  I didn't know if this was the JB3 or if my sound card outputs at a lower db rating?

Finally, it also appears there is no way to change the levels on the JB3, is that possible or am I not doing it correctly?

Thanks for any input you can give.

Gary

First: it does, when you go into record it will put on eon there. You might need to get the udated firmware

second. Dont know. I have recorded with my laptop and the jb3 at the same time and it was exactly the same.

Third. Not that i know of. I change the levels using the ua5.

What are you running it with?

Hi Gary!

You'll want to update your firmware to the 1.20.06 version, anything past that is buggy.  This will provide the update needed for level metering.

There is some sort of a level adjuster, although I'm not sure if it's for optical, but it's done in software and is pretty ugly I imagine.  Much better off adjusting the gain before it hits the JB3.

Thanks for the info.  I am running Superlux SMK-H8K > ART Phantom II > Denecke AD-20 > JB3.

I was looking to upgrade to the firmware you had mentioned, but the only one on Nomad World is the newest version.  Is it still possible to get the older firmware, and if so where?

Thanks,

Gary

You can not adjust levels optically on the JB3. It takes what is given.

I think you can find old firmwares on nomadness.net although I have the newest and it works fine.

www.nomadness.net  has the new driver.

I would *NOT* use the latest driver.  Why bother?  It offers no significant improvements over 1.20.06 for *taping* and has been known to cause almost irreversable problems to JB3's...  Once you go forward, you can't go back..

I just picked up a jb3 as backup or to replace the d8.....maybe.

How am I going to run this out of the UA-5. Can I just pick up any old optical cable?

Curious if anyone has read the meters off a d8 when running the jb3. From what i know the d8 is much easier to read.

hope that made sense.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you can't adjust the levels on ANY digital signal - digital is digital. You've gotta adjust in the analog realm, before it goes digital...right?

Well, I guess technically boosting levels after converting PC is digital realm, but for the sake of this discussion - realtime level adjustment with the decks/HD units we use - the answer is no, levels cannot be adjusted in the digital realm.

I'm not 100% sure but apparently SD hd recorders can mod levels in digital world
