With all the problems I've seen people have with their portable DATs - myself included...hmph  :'( - I'm picking up a JB3 to run along with (and hopefully some day in place of day) my D8/D100.

I think the JB3 is a great option for those getting into the game, now.  Both DAT and JB3 have their problems, but for now the JB3 is much cheaper and if you don't use it or want to switch to DAT, you won't have trouble unloading it.

I figured this would be an archival quality question by now.

Unless you seriously like spending money on the deck, tapes, service, etc., I'd go with the JB3.  Seems like you're working on an entry level rig, you can always take the money you're saving on a DAT deck and put it towards other areas of your rig.  YMMV

I picked up a JB3 to run with my dat. Everyone in Team Bama uses them with no problems. So far I like it. fast Firewire transfer. Easy to playback in the car which is nice.

il vote on the jb3

i replaced my M1 with a jb3, i have yet to have a problem whatsoever

i absolutely love mine, i transfer via firewire and have it tracked and burnt before i would have had my dats transferred

no tapes, no misloads. so easy with so little hassle

i'd go with the jb3, they are semi-delicate, but they are cheap and easy to use .... i love mine. Make sure you get an extra battery.

I really like the jb3 too....

never had a DAT, switched over from running the laptop.  So much smaller, easier to set up, and takes less time!

I totally use it in the car on the way home from the show.....  Nice option!

get a $20 fm transmitter. they work pretty well and are smaller than a pack of smokes.

see but with a jb3 isn't there a time limit for recording, per file, i thought it was a 2 gig limit...  i don't know, but thats what i thought, that would be a pain in the ass for a really long set to have it drop out after 2 gigs..

It's a 3 hour time limit and it only takes a few seconds to initialize a new file.  Same max as DAT and faster than a DAT tape change.
