here's my questions:

1) are these problems fixable?
2) how much would these repairs cost if I sent it into prodigital or the like
3) should I just stay away?

Of course.

I had symptoms like the second one, where the deck would just stop whatever function it was performing and would unload the tape.  WTF.  I paid flat-rate Sony rates to get mine fixed.  Cost around $300 all said and done.  Wish I'd sent it to ProDigital instead.  Give Paul a call, he may be able to quote a non-binding ballpark cost based on the symptoms.

3) should I just stay away?

Yes.  Find a used D8 for around $300 and I think you'll be better off.  I picked up a barely-used D8 off EBay for $300, just gotta keep an eye out.  Best are buying from people who used it to record their bands - typically not much use.

Schwill -- just caught another post of yours elsewhere about running mics > MP-2 > M1.  Definitely stick with an M1/D100 b/c the ADC is much better than the D8 ADC, IMO.  Just not sure this particular unit is the one you want given it's troubles.

You could always go for it, send it in to Paul at ProDig, and if it isn't worth fixing, sell it for what you paid for it.

thanx ska, I'm not too concerned with the 1st problem, the 2nd problem is the one I'd really want to fix.  I was thinking maybe I could get this fixed for around $150-200 making my total around $450, plus it comes with the coax/7pin cable.  I just emailed the owner a few questions, and I will do the same to Paul

Why not just spend $50 more and have one that you know will work? Sounds like too much of a hassle to me. You can get a good running M1 for $500. I would sell you mine for that.   The 7 pin is a bonus though, I just caught that.
