It's a PA system recording, yes, but hey, that's what most of us do....
hi and lo and I set this up as follows:
Sources are:
Schoeps MK5 (matched pair, cardiod, DIN)>KCY>tinybox (v2, output transformers)>DR-680
Schoeps MK5 (matched pair, cardiod, DIN)>KC5>CMC6>DR-680
Comments I'll respond to now"So this is really the 680s pre vs. the tinybox". Well, yes and no. I suppose it'd be nice to have had a VMS box so we could have done 2 KCY solutions and tested them at once, but I don't own one. KCY>PFA is not really a fair test since the PFA itself is a somewhat unknown variable. The goal here was to compare a common "low cost" Schoeps solution - KCY>tinybox -- vs an all-genuine Schoeps solution. If anyone wants to shoot a Lemosax or a VMS my way, please be my guest.
"This is not a valid comp because the house mix/PA sucks". I have nothing further to say to you. Reading about PA system recording is probably a fruitless endeavor for you, so I'm not really sure why you're on taperssection.
Mounting:
Both sets were in kwonbars, one on top of the other. See pic. The pic doesn't show this well, but height was ~7.5ft which is about that far or a bit more below the venue ceiling (i.e., ceiling reflections should not be a huge issue)
Processing:
Card>iMac>Both loaded into Audition CS 5.5>selections normalized>export to WAV>xAct>FLAC/MP3
The two selections are the same song. Available in both MP3 and FLAC. I did not do soundcloud as I think it's too lossy for anything other than a very general demo.
