best 8GB CF card for Microtrack 24/96?
« on: October 21, 2006, 10:39:58 PM »
Assuming 8gb is currently the largest size CF card I can get, what's the best price people have found on one suitable for the Microtrack 24/96? i.e. slow enough for audio work?
thanks

There's a guy on ebay selling the newest 16GB CF cards (they run around $400).  I have so far avoided ordering one, and don't know how they work in any of the audio devices we usually love and revere (until they screw up, when we hate them and the comapany they rode into town on).

heh, the battery will die long before you ever fill a 4gb card. Kinstonston and sandisk are the best on the market, just dont buy sandisk cards off of ebay!

get a external batterypack, or if possible, use the wall charger (venue dependent)
Seriously, the band makes the music. Tapers just point mics in the right direction and hit "record".

That's good to hear!  The last patcher I had complained about my AKGs, fluffed schoeps for about 15 minutes, stayed patched in, and farted on me all night long.

I have used the Kingston CF/8GB-S flawlessly for 4 months now.  Generally I run 24/48 so think  I don't have to worry about tape flips that much. er uh, button pushes.

My MT can run for about 20 hours on my Walmart Lithium and a Todd R juicebox.

I really don't know for sure on that time, though, because I never even came close to taping for that long.

I say if you get a sandisk on ebay go over the auction carefully:
http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=57532.0

After this happened I got an UltraII off ebay from another vendor with no problems. Just be sure the auction wording specifically contains the word "sandisk" and keep an eye out for anything fishy that points to a counterfeit item.

Peace,
Ben

I think that it is pretty safe to say that the 2 gig seamless autosplit will never be fixed with this unit...

Still works just fine for me though!!  I'll be cranking up my new sd722 soon but the MT 24/96 will still be a very active stealthing machine for me.

One thing that really annoys me is this machine cannot forward or rewind after playing a track for a few mins....anyone notice that the forward and rewind switch is SOOO slow and non responsive - hardly move the music at all?

I have started using my MT with a 8 Gb Sandisk Extreme III and it is working fine. I bought it new on Ebay from the UK for 117 Pounds including transport to Italy.
I record at 24/48 for the moment, but I should receive a Mic2496 pre and will use the MT as a bit bucket (I record quiet music and the MT pre is somewhat noisy), trying the 24/96 set up, so to test the CF card with a higher speed.
Of course there still is the 2 Gb limit, which gives almost 2 hours at 24/48, but then by pushing twice the record button it starts a new track (2 hours) in about 5 seconds. This is good enough to me.

With this capacity the battery duration is certainly the constraint. I have a home-made battery extender simply done with 4 AA alkaline batteries (the initial 6 V apparently are OK to the MT) and am working on a switching device which should supply 5 V starting from a wide range of input voltages (so I can use 4 NiMH high capacity cells to feed the MT. This should take some time since the switchning IC I ordered will arrive mid-December.

Hope the above is of help
bye

From e-bay: "Millions of eBayers have been deceived by inferior quality, unpopular cheap CF disguised as SanDisk Ultra II as more than 95% of all 1GB, 2GB, 4GB and 8GB CF listed on eBay are counterfeit items and many have fake capacities." :(

I'm using a Power Runner with an easy to make usb cable > a Power Runner LI battery.  These little batteries aren't cheap, but they are very nice, come with nice accessories, and can supply a good range of voltage:

http://www.batteryspace.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1284

I actually have the 2200, but the 2100, 2200, and 2300 are all nice, just various run times:
http://www.batteryspace.com/ProductImages/externalbattery/Power%20Runner%20Chart.pdf

I've also used the "Mobile Power Pack" Prod#: AC4009-614
http://www.socketcom.com/product/AC4009-614.asp

This little dude is cool, as you don't need to make any special usb cable, the standard one will do, but its pricey...

Dude- I got ripped too, probably the same guy-  >:( I knew better too, no paypal, and he had me send the payment to "Jorge Carlos" in Fl.  3 hours after emailing it, I get an email from Ebay telling me to not send payment!  I tried to recall the mail, but they delivered it any way.  Funny thing is the guy is still responding to my emails, saying he shipped it - he reply's as pitcart1@yahoo.com

Any way, ebay will cover up to $200 - a $25 service fee to refund scams like this, but you have to make your claim within 30days of auction, have proof of payment, etc.  Assuming I don't get the card this week, I'm filling a claim and reporting dude to the federal postal inspector and Fl. police, etc.

So, I ended up buying a 4gb Kingston Elite on new egg until the 8gb prices come down.  Pretty good price, $94.99:

Wow- that is a cool little box-

Does any one know how much run time you can expect using 4 AA batteries, with the MT capturing S/PDIF 24/48 (no phant.pwr, CF card)?

I'm testing a new Kingston 8gig card and I'm getting "Media is full" messages occaisionally.  Not every time I hit the record button, but about every other time.  I've reformatted the card a few times, but this still happens.  Anyone else getting this or have any solutions for me?  Using 1.4.3

I haven't had this happen here, but I've received more consistant and faster performance since updating to 1.45. You might want to do that first, since several of the issues it addresses are CF related.

everyone including ebay came back as a good person to deal with - he must have been setting us up with all the good deals and such
go fill out the ic3.gov and usps.com mail fruad forms too along with the ebay ones

edit on the sandisk linked above too--i checked into that and it seems to be real, 2 people confirmed the ones they got from the same seller were

Several people mentioned this card (Kingston 8GB 45x elite pro) before the firmware update, as working flawlessly.  That's why I thought this was odd.  I have done the 1.4.5 update and I continue to have this "media is full" message.  If I push the record button again, it starts recording.  The update did not fix this problem.  Checking the rec time available, I get 8:41:24.  It all appears to work, but this message concerns me.  Anyone else getting this?

I get that media full message and I just hit the button again.  Have not had a problems with the recording because of it.  The problem is not getting freaked out over it and just hitting the button again.  I always format the card when setting up so, I know it can't be full.  I run 1.4.5 and using a transend 8gb card.

Hmmm, interesting. I've never seen this message (othen than when it's true). I have a SanDisk 8 GB Ultra II and have never seen it and the 4GB version of the 45x Kingston and have also never seen it there.  Is it only the Kingston branded 8GB media that this happens on?

Anyone with any other 8GB cards encounter the problem? Anyone see it with the 4GB Kingston?

I use a Transcend 8GB and get it on the first file of the night.  After that no problem.  I have gotten use to it happening so, it doesn't bother me any more.  I always format after I am all set up so, the first time it happened it was not big deal.  It has never happened with my 4gb Kingston.

One thought I had was that maybe the cards that have the problem have just slightly more capacity than the ones that aren't having the problem and they are beyond some memory barrier or something (speaking of which, has anyone gotten and tried a 16GB card yet?).

The capacity of my Sandisk is: 12 hours, 51 minutes 23 seconds or 8,200,970,240 bytes
I also have a Seagate 8GB MicroDrive.  It's capacity is: 12 hours, 30 minutes 32 seconds or 7,979,319,296 bytes

(the time is the record time at 44.1/16 bits as reported by the MicroTrack, the bytes is the capacity number (not just free space) of bytes reported by Windows XP after formatting the card in the MicroTrack and then immediately booting into card reader mode with it.

Wow- that is a cool little box-

Does any one know how much run time you can expect using 4 AA batteries, with the MT capturing S/PDIF 24/48 (no phant.pwr, CF card)?

my guess is ~8 hours then when or if they die, your internal should smoothy take over.

I'm running 1.4.5 and am getting the Media Full Message every other time I press the REC button with the 4GB Kingston Elite Pro CF card.

It did work fine, other than this minor annoyance at the UM show last night.

Have you tested the Transcend 8GB with firmware 1.4.5?

And if so, is the Transcend 8GB the lowest price 8gb card that is "TS certified"  :) to work with the MT reliably?

I'm considering buying the Transcend 8GB as the next quality card is nearly $100 more...

Can you tell me what your settings are and your input source?  I can try to see if it happens with my 4GB Kingston Elite Pro card as well. Also, what is the card capacity after formatting (as shown by Windows).  Mine is: 4,195,864,576 bytes.  If yours is exactly the same I'd say that increases the likelyhood that both of our cards are exactly the same model using the same components.

So do you guys think its worth $80 more for a lifetime warranty CF card from Kingston:
http://www.amazon.com/Compactflash-Card-8GB-45X-Speed/dp/B000G700SE/sr=8-3/qid=1164175157/ref=sr_1_3/104-6911184-2670328?ie=UTF8&s=pc

Versus the $169.00 Transcend card?:

 ???

Has anyone heard anything about long term reliability of Transcend CF cards?  How generic or real deal are they?

well i got ripped off on ebay
won a kingston 8gb card for $60, never got it
the guy had 100% feedback too, ebay now has cancelled all his auctions and he stopped replying to me :(

Pretty good price, $94.99:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820160034

As the others said, I think its best to completely avoid memory on Ebay...   :o

thats him
i even told him i didn't trust him and was checking into him before i sent money
everyone including ebay came back as a good person to deal with - he must have been setting us up with all the good deals and such
go fill out the ic3.gov and usps.com mail fruad forms too along with the ebay ones

edit on the sandisk linked above too--i checked into that and it seems to be real, 2 people confirmed the ones they got from the same seller were

He probably hijacked some honest persons account. That happened to me some months ago. Ebay fixed everything, but I am sure a lot of people got burned. They changed some of my personal data, not all, and occasionally I still get an angry call which eBay tells me to ignore. They did fully restore the correct 100% feedback, so I guess if you are dealing with a good feedback person and they are not acting as such, move on or call eBay and voice the concern. A total nighmare for everyone except the rip off artist!

I have a Transcend 8GB 120x that I purchased from Fry's on 9/8/06.  I used it in my MT exclusively and recorded maybe 20-30 shows with it.  I just now 8/1/07 (Johnny Winter) ran in to a problem where the MT froze and locked up after about an hour and 10 minutes.  At least that is what the display showed after the show.  None of the buttons had any effect - even holding down the power button would not do anything.  The only way to get the MT to respond was to eject the CF card and then the MT would power down.

I did not suspect the CF and downloaded the latest firmware (1.4.6) and the problem repeated itself again 8/23/07 (Rodney Crowell) where the MT locks up around 1 hour 30 minutes.  BTW, I formatted the Transcend CF card in the MT before using and the hold button was on.  I ran a test with a Kingston CF card and everything recorded fine - it recorded the max file time and then started a new file.  I tested again with the Transcend card and it failed again.

I am gonna stick to the "premium" name brand CF cards now.

good luck with Transcend but one thing I have learned over the years building computers and such is that you don't skimp on any part just to save money.

you get exactly what you pay for.  My Kingston 8gb has never messed up on me.

Test your card on another type of recorder before you chuck it!  I have reported on my experience with the MT 2496, which I think is flaky in how it handles CF brands.  When I first got the machine, it worked fine with my Sandisk Ultraa II 8GB card.  I didn't use the MT much, but upgraded the firmware regularly.  At one point I used it, and found that I was getting a periodic clicking maybe four times a second when I ran it at 24/96 or 24/48, but not at 16 bits (even 16/96, so not likely a speed issue).  M-Audio blamed the card, but when I tried it in a Fostex or Marantz at 24/96 it worked fine.  However, a new Sankdisk 8GB card and a Delkin 8GB card did work correctly in the MT.  Go figure.  With the last firmware upgrade, I again tested the original card and it seems to work fine again.  I stress that the problem was not intermittant, the clicking occurred every time at 24 bits, and then went away just as completely with the new firmware.
