ISO - Stealthy Pre
« on: August 31, 2009, 01:48:01 PM »
that will work as a battery box for Spro mics (1/8) AND has 48v for Busman mics (xlr)
does such a box exist?
pref outputs to a 1/8

Seconded.  The size is gonna be tough to beat, especially when you take into account the 48V Phantom Power.  You can get the RCA outs and use an RCA>Miniplug cable.

An Aerco MP-2 would also meet your criteria, but at more than three times the cost of a Littlebox.

I'd say get the Littlebox, and if you decide it's not for you, you can flip it in the yardsale with no problems.

Just my two cents.

Aerco only has xlr in (with 48p) no 1/8
it has rca outs and 1/8 out (intended for headphone use not recording)
music>mics>pre>recorder

thanks the aerco is way out of my price range anyway

i am really looking to replace my SP BBox with something that would allow me to also run a 48v mic open rig if i wanted
the lb seems to be the best idea for this

Yep, the LB is very configurable.  You can get RCA outs and 1/8" out (what I have), or miniXLR as another option.  Inputs on XLR or miniXLR I believe, plus 1/8" plug-in power input.  You can also get one put together with an internal li-ion battery, which has a great battery life, but isn't field replaceable like a 9v.  Best to contact Jon/mshilarious, or visit naiant.com to look into your design options.

Sound Devices MP-2/MixPre is also a small pre with phantom, a 1/8" output, and uses internal AA batteries (or external if you want) with pretty good battery life.

but does it also have 1/8 in for plug in mics? pretty sure only has xlr
thats the hard part for me - hoping to find one box for both applications

I misunderstood your original post.  I thought you were looking for 1/8" output (which is why I recommended the two pre's w/ RCA outs...dual RCA>1/8" cables would fix that).

I just realized you were inquiring about a 1/8" INPUT.  In that case, please disregard my Aerco suggestion.

Will, you could borrow my AERCO for a test run if you'd like.  However, mine only has balanced XLR outs.  LMK - Matt

Ah... I misread the question too.  So a pre that can deliver 48V phantom via XLR inputs and 9V (or around) plug-in power via 1/8" input.  I don't know of any pres/recorders that can do that, but personally I would just use a 9100 for 1/8" mics and something else for the phantom mics.

Based on my re-reading of the original post, (and I'm not trying to fluff Naiant per se) I'd say Littlebox will be your best bet.  Have Jon configure the 3.5mm jack for plug-in-power, and you'll still have the XLR ins on the back of the unit.  This way, if you ever switch to (or get an additional pair of) XLR mics, you can use one pre with both sets.

while the littlebox looks like a great option, Jon (at Naiant) also makes an XLR > 1/8" adaptor that takes phantom power from the XLR's and converts it to plug-in power for the 1/8".  So if you get that adaptor, it opens up your options for any pre-amp that provides +48V phantom power.  just another way to go.
