DPA windscreens
« on: May 05, 2003, 04:12:16 PM »
Anyone know a retailer that actually sells these?  I did a model number search, and came up with nothing but euro retailers.  Thanks if you got one.

Hey D....hope you didn't end up ordering the Shure ones from brookmays.com - they said "usually ship within 5-7 days" but they're apparently on back order, and didn't tell me about it. I was wondering why the hell I hadn't gotten a notification. :( Poor customer service, IMHO...

fwiw, the DPAs won't stop more than a stiff breeze imho.  i'm lookin' for something better for outdoors this Summer.  thinkin' about tryin' the Shure's or perhaps some zeppelins of some sort.  Schoeps makes a nice small ball gag for the capsules/ actives.  got a link to it here somewhere.  lemme know if ya need it.

just my .02  clink/ clank.  ;)

I was wondering about those funky schoeps ball bags and furry covers. They looked cool at the expense of making your mics look like 2 hampsters mounted on the end of a pole. I need some beefy ones for the summer

Scott's got a point.  but i think the DPAs are 'very' dependant on which direction the wind is coming from also.  i'll qualify by saying these do well unless the wind is coming from the general direction of yer pickup pattern.  in this scenario, if more than a stiff breeze, it's time to 'beef up' imho.  ;)

Will those Shure windscreens work with the 391's? Looks like there is a mm or two difference in diameter. I don't want them blowing off if I get a tail wind. Thanks.

A mm or two isn't going to cause any problems - they'll work, and won't blow off in a tailwind.

brian, how's the highs with the shure 81's?  i'm looking into a pair for telluride, where there is usually some viscious wind during the day.  just worried about chopping off the top end and getting a bunch of mud.  also, looks like you're stuffing them into the cairn w/out any protection.  do they have a good 'shape memory'?

I haven't run a direct comparison of A81WS vs. no windscreen, but I can tell you my sets from the Grey Fox BG fest last summer - for which I ran the Shure's all weekend - sound fine (my location, on the other hand, was a different matter).  My ears on my gear don't notice any rolloff in the highs, although I suppose it's likely there's a tiny amount of rolloff (I think most windscreens do this, even if just a tiny amount).  Certainly not 'chopped' at any rate!

Yeah, I do stuff 'em into the Cairn without protection.  I can't speak to their shape memory b/c I have enough room in the Cairn they don't get squashed.  If I packed them in a tighter spot, I'd put 'em in their cardboard boxes to be safe.

I don't know of a "reasonably" priced windscreen for serious outdoor taping better than the Shure A81WS.  If they're good enough for George W, they're good enough for me!   :P

Seriously, unless you get into an expensive cage + shag kinda setup, I think the Shure's can't be beat.

my screens just arrived via ups.

i cant wait to run both of these screens!!!

i agree with you brian, i really do need 3 sets of screens:

(1) smoke screens -  to protect from smoke in small bars
(2) fan/wind screens - for indoor venues with high power fans and ducting, and outdoor venues with slight wind
(3) wind/monsoon/tornado screens - for windy outdoor venues with heavy wind.

the dpa's look great for #2 and the shures definately for #3

can wait to test these out!!!

+T to brian skalinder for the recommendation and pics!!!
