thoughts on running xxx mic's > sd mp2 > sd 7xx Vs xxx mic's > sd7xx?
How different do you think the pre's are? FWIW I've never seen/heard of anyone running this rig.

The 7xx pre sounds excellent in my opinion. I don't know that the MP2 would sound better than the 7xx pre. Granted, I've never used an MP2.

No IMHO putting the MP2 in front of the 7XX would be counterproductive, although if you like the sound of the MP2, I suppose a counter argument could be made.  I think the majority here would say that the 7XX have a better sound than the MP2 due to the fact that the MP2 can get a bit loose at some frequencies.

In another thread made withn the last couple months someone gave the technical reasons why these two products, although made by the same company, aren't close to being the same preamp.

I used a MP2 for years and sold it when I bought my 744. I like the 744 pre much better.

i have both SD MP2 and SD 722 and i wouldn't have thought to run the mp2 in front of the 722.  but that is also because i wouldnt probably want to run the 460's transformers into the mp2's transformers... might be a little too much snuggly warmth for my taste.

i really like the mp2 with the AT853 and the VP88... gives both of those mics a bit more something to bite into.  but i probably still wouldnt run those mics into the 722 since i typically use those mics for low pro stuff.

the earthworks might be fun in front of the mp2 > 722, but straight into the 722 would probably be adequate to say the least.

imho, a box would have to be very well paired with or complement and balance the mics or just super awesome to warrant me thinking i would need something else to tote around.  more shit to turn on, power, cable up, go wrong... i went to the SD7xx for a bombproof all in one.

Hell NO! The MP2 is much floppier and less detailed all the way around....and yes I used to have an mp2. Now I run v3>722 or straight in to 722

I used to have the MixPre which was similar...I never run 722 and MixPre together because on the field there's too much to worry about. Having extra gear to setup and carry it is just makes more trouble. If you don't have the MP2 I'll say forget running the 2 together. It's not worth wasting money for something that will not give you a huge difference and also waste your time for setting the 2 up. I sold my mixpre because it's a waste of money and time having it. But using the 302 and 442 is a different story. If I were you I will not bother with it. If you don't really like the 722 preamp and wanting to get a different sound you should consider the V3 instead. I know it's more expensive but at least it's worth the money and time.

fwiw I haven't run the mp2 in front of the sd702 yet. currently I'm running km140>v3(analog)>sd702. Just wanted to hear peoples "opinion" on the mp2. either way no one has run the combo and is just speculating.
would love to hear from anyone who ran mp2 > sd 7xx!

I actually ran a comp for this at some point, changed the pre mid set:

http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,60472.0.html

I also have a DMB show or two that I ran split (one set to DAT, one set to 722).  I'll see if I can dig those up and post something.  I posted those at some point with a poll (http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,57111.0.html).  I recently deleted those comp files, but have the sources somewhere...

I recently dropped the 722 pre in favor of the v2, but think the 722 pre is great, and the mp2 is not worth the work of keeping an extra pre.
