Looking to purchase a V3
« on: April 22, 2005, 12:28:17 PM »
I am looking to purchase a V3, with the opti-mod.  I usually buy most of my gear from the Oade Brothers, so I would like to stick with them.  They mentioned in an email that they would match any price out there.  I know it's not cool to post prices in the forum, but could people email me a reasponable price for the modded V3?  I'm at: bhoy@eaw.com.  I would also consider doing business with other companies if there is someone you'd recommend.

Also, once I get the unit - I will need the battery from Walmart, and a right angle cable from Marc?  To start off, I plan on running the unit with my AKG451's.

Thanks,
Bill

FYI, it's okay to post prices here - it's an individual / retailer choice, we don't restrict that info at the forum level.

Have you considered the Yard Sale forum?  There's at least one FS now from a reputable member.

if you are worried about purchasing that particular unit used(i'm assuming it's Dustin's here) I can vouch that it is in excellent condition.

I've done business with Dustin as well and he is a-ok.  But in general, I'd have no fears whatsoever about buying a used V3.  Grace Design has got fantastic service and they stand behind their product 100%.  Their warranty on the V3 is for 5 years and it goes with the unit, no matter who the original owner was.  And the optimod they do extends the warranty for 5 years from the time the mod is done.  Since they didn't start doing the mod until June 2004, Dustin's V3 will have a full warranty until at least June 2009.  Very good way of saving some money if you're already looking for an opti-mod V3.

question for you V3 users who sent it to Grace for the optical out mod.
when Grace returned it back to you, did they include the word-clock or did they keep that?

The optical mod replaces the word clock.  Are you asking if they gave the word clock parts back?  If that's your question, the answer for me is no.  Though if you asked they'd probably give you the parts back.

cool, to me, the word clock is more important than a optical out.
was just considering what I might need to do if I purchased a used V3 with the opti mod.

thanks again

You'll almost certainly pay more used for an opti-mod V3 compared to a regular V3.  If you don't want the opti-mod and will just be returning it to Grace to get the word clock back, you'd be better off looking for a plain V3 to begin with.

Just curious though, why do you want the word clock?  Not too many concert tapers want to do multi-source mixes to begin with, and not too many pieces of gear out there that will accept the word clock output of the V3.  I guess the AD500/AD1000 have a word clock input, and I think the G-P ADC-20, but that's about all I can think of off the top of my head.

I would prefer the standard V3 with word clock as it would be cheaper, but considering they show up rarely and a used opti-mod V3 is still cheaper than a new V3 I was just considering the options.

as to why I want the word clock:
I do a LOT of multitracks with room mics mixed in for ambience. usually, the sbd channels take all of my available analog inputs on my MOTUs so I need the word clock output of the V3 to ensure that my MOTUs sync up with the V3s clock so everything stays in sync(room mics would go digi out of the V3 into the s/pdif input of the MOTUmkii)

Gotcha, thanks.  Just curious why anyone would be needing a word clock out, since I wasn't coming up with any equipment that got run much these days that accepted them.  Plus I knew the MMe in your sig line wouldn't take it.  I didn't know about the MOTU and 722 having a word clock in, though.

BTW, how are you liking the ECMS-23 with your MG caps?  I love my ECMS-22 with my AKG caps -- best of all worlds, AKG sound, choice of omni/hyper/card caps, small low-pro active setup, and stealthing possibilities.

I love it!
my only complaint is figuring a way to store it in my bag safely when not in use, but still have quick/easy setup/teardown
