I used the battery that came with it and a generic and was fine for the 2 1/2 hour Foo show. I had another generic but didnt need it...used a whole other camera for opener.

So what camera will give me better video overall?

The Lumix DMC-ZS7 or the Sony DSC-HX9V ?

I see the Sony allows zoom while recording but what about recording time?
Is it unlimited like the Lumix?

Thanks,
Datfly

As far as I know, there are no point-and-shoot cams that shoot unlimited 1080 HD - most have a 30 minute (give or take) limit.  The ZS7 only shoots up to 720 HD, so that's why it goes unlimited.

I wonder if the next model Lumix will do unlimited @ 1080? Specs should be announced late January.

The ZS10 that came out in February 2011 had the same time limitation as all the others when shooting in full HD .

Waiting for a camera with HD video which seemlessly auto-starts a new file at the 30min limit, just like our audio recorders do at the 2GB file limit.

I'm not sure when that'll be.  But I really don't see the need to wait - especially if it means you're going to miss some good opportunities to capture some tasty jams.  As long as you keep an eye on it, stopping and restarting between songs every 20-25 minutes is easy to do and you only miss a little crowd cheer.

I'd like it for start & forget situations so I don't have to worry about checking the camera(s) during a set- especially for odd camera placements, several cameras in different locations, etc.

I'd also like it for easier syncing with audio in post.  Syncing one long clip takes a quarter of the time of syncing four short clips.

My Costco has the Lumix ZS10 for on sale for 199.99 & the Canon HX9V on sale for 249.99.......

When the 30 min of HD recording is up on the Canon or Lumix do they just stop or does the cameras shut down?
Price isn't the issue I just want the obvious, good quality & focus in low concert light. Which one?
First one to get three votes is the one I go & buy.

Thanks,
Datfly

I recommend you go on youtube and search for concert footage shot with both cameras and make a comparison.

I had serious problems with the focus on the ZS10 that I don't have with the HX9V - but I only had the ZS10 for a few weeks before it went for a swim (never to work again), so I don't have nearly as much experience with it.
