MDs->DAT
« on: October 17, 2003, 06:59:30 PM »
Since I have all the equipment, I was thinking about transfering all my MDs to DAT and then selling the blanks and possibly the MD deck.  Just curious what people thought of MD vs DAT as far as stability of the media.  Would I be better off just to leave them on MD.

I used to use md exclusively to tape so I have quite a few (quite a few to as far as I'm concerned) shows on md. I just bought an md deck with optical out. I plan on transferring all the good stuff on md to cdr via my standalone burner. I won't get rid of the md masters, as I feel it makes for a good backup.

If you think you'll never use md again...shoot them over to DAT or cdr and get rid of them all. I plan on still using my md for mixes or for putting studio stuff I have to md for use in my portable. I figure it's always nice to have the ease of the portable for taking my music with me, and I don't worry if I lose an md here or there. I would be p.o.'ed if I lost an album though.

To answer you question...I'd say get your md stuff digitally onto cdr in SHN format. You never know when a tape might break. I think md is the more reliable archive format as far as media stability goes. I base this soley on my personal experience...not hard data.

Trasnfer the Md stuff to cds. Dat is not reliable. Make audio cds and back them up to shn or flac

We'll have to talk once I get around to getting a machine with an optical input.

CDrs aren't that durable either. Scratch one and poof, gone forever.

I'm a big advocate of keeping all the master tapes. Think what would happen if someone had a ton of old reels that just transferred them onto analog and then got rid of the reels.

slightly ot: where'd you get the MD deck with the optical out? i have about 200+ shows I need to convert. :)

Cds are fair more durable then dat. I am not saying make a audio cd and thats. Back them up to shn or flac. Burn backs of the shn or flac then burn a listening cd. Backup Backup Backup

in terms of reliability the best thing to do is to trade the show ,  that way others have equal quality copies  that in a pinch you can get a copy of .
yet another reason not to horde.   :)
