Calling anybody with cable building knowledge...
« on: November 04, 2003, 10:50:08 AM »
Since Ive gotten Jefs DA-P1 Ive been running: Mixpad 1/4inch outs > 1/4in to rca adaptors > Rca cable > P1 rca in. But @ MMW, the left channel was craping out, I think because of the rca in on the p1, So I wanna build some 1/4 to xlr cables to simplify the connection. Here is my question: I have a bunch of old guitar cables and xlr cables laying around the house. Could I just cut the female side of the xlr and solder a male 1/4 from an old guitar cable on it??? THANKS!

Thanks mike! You know how an xlr cable has like three or four different wires inside, should I just solder them altogether on the 1/4 thing??? THANKS!

Note that using the xlr's on the P1 you will not be bypassing the internal preamp....  You'll be adding more color to your signal... ???

My recommendation would be check your solder joints on the P1's rca inputs...

the pre/ad is good enuf in the dap1, thats why they retailed so much....they really "were" the old all-in-one box ;Dbut a v2or3 soundz great in front of them,,,,,some b+K>v2>dap1 are some of the sweetest tapes ive heard, plus, its stealthable 8)

experiment, i know if i had a dap1, id run the dmic in front prolly 50/50, i like the pre/ad in the dap1...on nye2k in the everglades, we had the v2 die first, then the ad1000, then we just ran cad>dap1 and it sounded damn fine, then that died...the pre CAN be clipped, that why someting like a v2/3 is ideal, but i think you'll be pleasantly surprised.... 8)

Ok...
Are you doing a Matrix recording?  If not, run the mics straight into P1 and ditch the MixPad.  If the P1 has not been Modified expect a grainy signal.  I guess it will all depend on how anal you are about signal coloration & flow...  Nothing Bad about going XLR in on a P1.  You will have two preamps in you signal chain  Mixpad > P1...  The P1's xlr go straight to the internal preamp then to the ADC.  Only the rca inputs bypass the internal preamp and sends the signal straight to the ADC.  Good Luck!

MikeO
