Sorry, I couldn't resist.   :P

There's gotta be something between Edirol UA-1D and Cool Edit.  UA-1D is USB into your PC, right?  Check your Cool Edit and configuration, it's probably just not set up correctly - i.e. not expecting the input (USB) you're providing.

I don't know the UA-1D specifically, but the device I use (ESI's U2A) has its own separate control panel that you have to have open as well. Is there software or a driver that came with the UA-1D, maybe?

Check your UA-1D documentation / help file / support webpage to find out how to access its control panel to ensure your settings are correct.

What version of Cool Edit are you using?  In CE2000, the settings are accessible from the main menu:  Options | Settings.

Yeah...
You need to configure your soundcard driver correctly.
With my Audiophile 2496 I have to reconfigure the driver anytime I change from analog to digital input. I just made pre-sets that I load for each different configuration I need.
Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.

To find out if you have CE2000, on the main menu go to Help | About.  You can do this in just about all software to find out what version you're running.

In Settings, switch to the Devices tab and select the appropriate device from the Waveform Record dropdown (your UA-1D).  Likewise for playback (your soundcard).

Also, reading - or at least scannning - the Help File is often useful to gather a general knowledge about the product.

there are 2 choices under device, a wavform record and a waveform playback and ua-1d is available under both of those

Think about it a minute.  You're trying to record from your D8, through the UA-1D and into CE2000.  So...set the Waveform Record dropdown to the UA-1D.

For playback, you're not playing out through your UA-1D, so you'll select a different device.  Which device depends on your PC.  Try different devices in the Waveform Playback dropdown until you find one that will playback so you can hear it over your speakers.

if it IS on both the recorder AND the playback, then you've configured it correctly, just select the ua1d and click apply, i have the ua1d, but i run wavelab 4.0c...
