Nitpicky Cable Storage
« on: November 13, 2004, 11:09:13 AM »
No, this isn't a thread on how to wrap long cables (though I've got those links around if you want them).  This is a little pet peeve of mine that someone actually got right for one of the first times.  When you store, ship, transport, anything other than use cables keep them in a plastic bag.

I see way too many people store their cables open in their bag unconnected.  Connected is fine, but unconnected can lead to dust in your connectors, creating potential for bad connections.

Just a nitpicky thing that I wanted to make sure people were aware of.

wouldnt worry about it, but worthwhile putting something on the mic end to cover it so that any dust that might be in the bag doesnt end up in there

i keep my cables disconnected and my bag zipped.  my cables sit in plastic bags except for the dpas which are rolled up in small tins.  i need to find some decent containers for my v3 and 148 to keep the dust out of there

my microphones always stay in a plastic bubble-rap bag in a vinyl pouch whenever not used.  my am hypers are connected to the v3 and then coiled into a plasitc bag.

i'm a dork too....but hey i want my shit to last :P

XLR (and other) cable ends will TARNISH over time also.  I broke into a box a crap from my old bands PA (I'm the consummate mic cable & DI thief), and found alot of the pins were black with tarnish.

Someone makes a brush for 1/4 phone and also XLR pins and sockets for cleaning these things (on consoles especially) as exposure will crap them up over time...

Anyone seen some sort of plug for XLRs that will cover the unused ports on a preamp?  My V3 has all sorts of exposed connectors on the back that I would like to plug to keep dust and grime out.

For connector tarnish I've been using caig gold and deoxit to clean and treat connectors.  That seems to work pretty well.

yeah, about once every 6-12 months i undo everything out of the bag, make sure everything is kosher, and clean everything, then reconnect and put back into my bag and zip it up

my gear stays primo, i want my stuff to last too, but im not putting plastic bags over my mic ends in my bag, after all, the bag is zipped up and sitting in my moisture-free basement
