vaio picturebook field powering?
« on: February 10, 2004, 08:03:03 AM »
im looking into some different options for powering my new (to me) picturebook in the field

i dont have it in my hands yet, so i dont have the voltage specs on the back, what voltage does this sucker run in?

i was looking at these "universal" packs from batteryspace.com, i know a few guys here are running them (joew ???)

does anyone have any idea what the current draw of the picturebook would be when recording? or any idea of runtime on these 4000mah packs:
http://www.batteryspace.com/product.asp?0=238&1=287&3=172

they definantly look like the cheaper option for now, then down the road a month or two i can pick up a n charge or electrovaya pack to make life easier

while im on the subject, does anyone know which model electrovaya pack will work with the picturebook? thier site just has sony > vaio and has it down for model D, does it have to be D? almost all the packs used on ebay are model A...

Thanks for any help
Dustin

and i found that the voltage requirement for the picturebook is 11.1v correct?

also, can the universal laptop batterys at batteryspace.com be used in conjunction with the regular battery?

Not sure about the draw and can't check as I'm at work, but I use the Sony Quad Capacity battery to power mine.  It's a 9600 mah battery and I can get around 7 hours or so when recording and even more when just screwing around on the internet, etc.  I think I paid around 220 for it, so not a bad deal at all especially since it will help retain the size of the laptop rather than adding an extra piece of gear to haul around.

If you decide to go with a quad. cap. battery don't buy new, unless you really don't have anywhere better to sink your $400..  Ebay is a good place to pick up a used one

Do a google search for "Sony C1VN Quad Battery".  I just found a couple places without much effort, although they are selling them for quite a bit more than I paid so I would search around a little harder than I just did.  I don't think you should pay more than 300 bucks for one and with a little effort you ought to be able to find that fairly easily.

rustoleum, what do you thing about powering it with a 12v sla? just make a power cable and feed it 12v since it is 11.1v internally...

im running a c1vp, but essentially a c1vn with the 3 gig bigger hd and the 667 processor

Never tried it but presumably it would work as long as you made the cable correctly.   You could also get a power invertor instead of making a custom cable.  I use one for charging my lappy on the road, but never thought to bring it into the field.  I guess I lug enough shit around as it is, ya know?   :)

hopefully i can get another option since the sla i was looking at was only 7.2ah

what models of the electrovoya will work with the pbook? the site only has listing for sony > vaio...  and says model D. but does it matter? does it use the regular lappy cord that you allready have or what?

if the model A would work, the most common model on ebay, i would buy a 160 model right now...

different models (A,C,D,etc..) determine which set of cables comes with your powerpad..  So yes, you will need the correct model, unless you can find the correct cable some other way

no, the larger vaios take a round plug.. the pbook uses a plug that is similar to a scaled down 7pin, kind of.
