It seems that video people prefer the X2, but mainly for features that we don't need for taping anyway.
I conclude that for plain concert taping, MixPre is better value for money given the price tag.

I've read a bunch of threads dealing with these two models:

Thanks for those links.

Should the lack of line in be a problem? Should I be worried that Oleg likes the Wendt? Does he still have those new mics for sale?  ::)

The Wendt X2 is going to have a much longer battery life (over double) - 12 hours. Apart from that I don't think it would really matter which one you purchase, given the very loud sources people around here record and that both mic preamps are excellent. I'd buy the cheaper one. I have a MixPre and would buy it again...and again, but I am recording acoustic instruments and ambiances with mine.

I think the wendt x2 does very well for our purposes.
I have used mine for over a year now and I am very happy with it.
the trim pots are sensitive, but other then that its very easy to use.
I like the how bright the meters are, I can see them easily in the dark.
here are a few recordings I made with mine:

I am going to use it with my AKG568's this April for 5 of the Dead shows I am attending.

I have used both the X2 and X4. Both are built like tanks. I liked the X4 better because I wasn't super fond of the LEDs providing me with accurate readings. But that aside, it's a great mixer/pre-amp.

I don't have trouble recommending either the Wendt or SoundDevices units, but between the MixPre and Wendt X2, I would recommend the X2. Primarily because longevity of battery life, quality of the preamps (it was able to provide the 10 mA of current required for Earthwork microphones without any issues and sounds very clean), and build quality of the X2.

While the X2 has been replaced by the X3, the X2 is still a great unit.

I wasn't super fond of the LEDs providing me with accurate readings.

That reminds me, and as others have said, the MixPre LEDs are too bright...the MixPre could (probably) truthfully market the LEDs as -

"The only field mixer display that can be seen from space" :)

...on their lowest setting (there are 3) at night they are painfully bright and still visible in full sunlight, on the beach.

at least for sound for film business i found the wendt be better  , it  has larger pots
mic and line level outs , better buttery life and much much durable in hard conditions .
phantom power is separate on each channel .
the only benefit of mix pre  is pick meters and limiter which could be adjusted
oleg kaizerman(gebe)hollyland
kaizeroaudio-rentals -sound for film/tv sales

schoepses, gefells, sankens, sennheisers....all kind of shit ....ends with deva 16  fusion ,zfr,788, 744, hhb
