My rig is two AT MB4Ks going into a Presonus Audiobox USB then into line in of my DR-07. I found out that the Audiobox functions as a standalone preamp with USB power so I have been using it in this way. Thing is, I hate to lug around the Audiobox if I don't have to. Is the external preamp really necessary for this recorder? I don't need phantom power as the mics run on AA batteries. Is it ok to go two xlr to 3.5mm straight into line in or am I going to run into issues with levels?

Anyone? Does the fact that I'd lose balancing be a big issue on 15 foot cable runs?

so you have a cable that has two xlr males to one mini jack?

Nope, but I was planning on buying/making one if this seemed to be a better solution.

I've recorded with the DR07 with just a Denecke PS-2 out front, no preamp, going Mic In. Never had a problem overloading.

Where did you get the xlr male to 3.5mm cable?

I have one robb (darktrain) made me or I'm sure b&h or maybe even a guitar center carries them.

Does going without the preamp/losing the balancing of the mics add a lot of noise on a +/- 15 foot run?

it does not affect audio from my at822 using the 15 foot cord i have. i think signal degradation would occur at a little longer distance and it may not be too noticeable.

Agree with Sean. I've run AKG C568EB (shotguns) > Denecke PS-2 > Tascam DR-1 with 15 feet of cable. DR-07 should not be a problem either. Dig it!
