Topic: CA14 + Sony PCM 10

Hi, it might be a silly question: I've got CA14 incl Battery Box. Last Months I used the mice with my sony PCM10 without Battery Box (Mic In). Is it useful to use the Battery Box? If so: what is the opportunity?

I don't know for sure on the PCM-M10, but most Plug-in-Power supplies are on the order of 2-3 volts.  A batt box gives you 9 volts typically.  That's 3 time the voltage and should greatly increase the dynamic range of the mics.

What Gene said. Mostly matters for loud shows, but it never hurts to have the battery box in there, so why not?

It depends on the volume of the music you are recording.  For most sources, you can use either the mic (set to low) or the line input.  For really loud stuff, you should go line (especially if you would have to go much below 2 on the gain knob using mic-in).  For really quiet stuff, you should go mic (especially if you wouldn't be able to get good levels using the line-in).  For really, really quiet stuff, you could set the mic input to high...

Use my battery box at all times. To avoid distortion.. You may get away with it from time to time but you never know how loud a show is going to be until you are there so as a safety use the battery box to avoid distortion.

The battery box makes the mics work better. With the power from the BBox they can handle louder sounds. I always use my Church mics with the BBox through Line-in. You may have to turn up the PCM-M10 to 8 or 9 but you will get a better recording.

I have yet to find a show where I've wanted to set the gain below 8 or 9 on Line In with CA-14 cards. Sensitive they are not.

I may be out of the norm but i always run battery box to mic in as there is no gain on the battery box and run a preamp into line in.

With the Sony at least the difference between mic-in and line-in is small to nonexistent. 

At quiet shows mics plugged into a batt box will need to go mic-in with nearly any recorder since the batt box is not amplifying the signal. 

Pre amp goes line-in.  Batt box usually goes mic-in unless you're at something really loud.

But I also know that for many years I have been going Mic-->Battery Box-->Line-in at any show with a PA system--and some, like orchestras, without.   

People who, unlike me, actually know something about electronics and work with professional equipment are used to sending a pre-amped signal into Line-in. All I can say is, battery box into Line-in works. Maybe it's because I've always been using Sony recorders and plug-in-power mics, but it works.

When recording loud amplified rock bands, you will nearly always need to go mics > BB > line-in with an M10. Using DPA4061's (which are not sensitive mics) I always found I needed to go line-in with a record setting of 4 to 5. Mic-in is fine for quiet shows.
