Topic: active 7 pin uses

im using a sony pcm-m1 dat recorder w/ an active 7 pin coax cable.  my cable has a digital/analog switch on the 7 pin connector.  im wondering when, why, and how i would want to use the analog side of this function?  is this a basic analog rca connection using both coax ends(in and out)?  sony leaves much about their product to be discovered by the user.

if you switch to analog you are taking the in from on top of your dat deck and using that as the analog in, then sending a digital signal out via your coax

my 7 pin has 2 coax ends coming out of the 7 pin connector.  one is the "in" and the other is "out" during digital use, so are both digital outs during analog mode?

basically you set the switch to analog if you are getting an analog signal from microphones, another deck, soundboard ect....  and want to pass the signal to others digitaly.

since I get a digital signal in via my 7 pin,
I only switch the switch to analog when I want to sput a blank leader on my tape while everything is hooked up.

On a related note, I have a Pro Digital active cable. . . From the 7pin connector, one cable is male and the other is female.  The male definitely seems to be the "in" as the signal travels toward my deck from my UA-5.  Is the female an "out"?

Ryan(olyrc) was at my apt this weekend and we were messing around with our 7pins.  Both are active but only mine actually has an out.  Any reason why his would be selectable between analog/digital but no way to output when on ananlog?
