Some people love them, some people don't.  I'm among those who don't.  $200 sure isn't much, tho, and if you like 'em go ahead and buy 'em!

Bose is the least respected name in the audiophile world..  I feel Bose stuff does have it's place (my mother in law's house, she loves Bose stuff, and it works great for her)...  But the reason so many people detest Bose is they don't perform well for music, and Bose spends so much in advertising that most people don't know better.  IMO the same money you can get something much better.

A pair of B&W DM303's, for example...

hmmmm......I've always kinda liked bose but I'm hoping to upgrade to a pair of decent speakers soon.  Right now I have a pair of old JBL 2800ss and a small pair of infinitys>  I guess I need to keep looking.  Any recommendations in the $400 range??

I had a pair about 15 years ago. Each box contains 9 small speakers.
Placement is very critical  because several of the speakers are reverse fireing and you must use a bose crossover box between the amp and the speakers.
I myself would stay away from all bose but I have come to like the sound of B&W and Maggies.
I'd also stay away from all Bang & Olufsen & Sunfire products.

Back when I was in highschool Bose was the shit.  When the 901s came out I lusted over them for years.  $200 is a steal as long as it comes with the crossover box.  Bose has started to schwag out over the past few years.  Now they have stores at those damn outlet malls that are popping up all over the country. >:(

Yeah, even new, the DM602 or DM602.5's go for 6-700/pair which is very reasonable for how good they sound :)

I have the 602.5's and love them. You'd be suprised how much of a difference it makes in low end extension to get the full size speaker and not the bookshelf, plus you don't spend a few hundred on speaker stands.

I preferred the 602's and 602.5's over the comprable Paradigm speakers and the Paradigms are much more expensive.

I think I paid around $700/pr and then spent another $500 on a NAD 370 integrated amp. Throw in some interconnects and speaker cable and you can have a decent system for under $1500. Not exxactly cheap but not too pricey either.

No highs, no lows.... gotta be BOSE!!! :)  Oh and since when did B&W become the only speaker out there?  All I hear on this forum is B&W this and B&W that (a few seem to like the Maggies though).  What happened to Monitor Audio, JM Labs, Dynaudio, VMPS, Klipsch (ouch did I just say that, my ears hurt), ProAc, etc??  I know I bought some internet hyped speakers (Onix Rocket), but it looks like they are gonna try and hit a serious market. Just bought a 20K sq. foot facility in China to house and build their own cabinets.  My next set of speakers are gonna be some JM Lab Utopias though!  These are way down the line as the wife and I have kinda planned our finances the next 5 years 1) Jamaica trip (maybe) & '99-01 Baja Hammer w/ 454 and thru hull, 2)kid and new vehicle for her- Chevy Equinox, 3)nothing but fun w/ the kid 4)possibly another kid, 5) a serious HT (projector and all.)

Scott, It's time you stopped fucking around with wanting just the Utopias and went to the Grande Utopias.  Or those Dynaudio Evidence or the Pipedreams speakers.  Those Pipedreams look phenemonal!  Now if I only had a room with a 25 foot celing in it so they didn't look so out of place.....

that is sharp!  That thing would fly w/ 2 350's.  Doesn't look like they would even fit.  Got some prospects down in OH for a couple boats.  I might just have to take a drive to Columbus for the weekend.  Some prices are almost too good.

I've yet to hear the Tannoy System 600A, but will be looking into those for some monitors when we finish the office in the fall.  Doug suggested I look into them.

I think we need to include attachment to PM's

Wiggler,
The wife and I might be driving down to Cloumbus this weekend to check this out! It would match the Z71 perfectly!! It must be a sign :)

I think B&W's get a lot of props because they're available in most cities, so people can actually go and listen to em.  Oh... on top of that, they're great for the money :)

I've never heard any Tannoy's... not sure I have a local dealer, but would be interested in the system 600a for monitors as well.

yeah, but they are the shit for hotel rooms in the post show environment.  rca inputs and decent output, all things considered.  I want one expressly for weekend trips and hotel stays.  Would love for someone to make a better recommendation for my bedroom!  I am seriously thinking bout getting one on the payment plan, but would love to try to get a cheaper version

i havent seen many people posting about infiniti speakers

i have the large floor speakers, and they are fabulous! i bought the matching center channel (great for DVD's and TV).

I use a pair of KLH Bookshelf speakers for my two 'rears'.
I have those mounted perfectly in the corners of the room.

I love the way my infiniti's sound...

... anyone else use infiniti?

i'll be going to 24bit soon for recording... wondring if i'll need a d>a  or if itll be best to just back stuff up (24b) for now, and resample the files to 16/44.1 for playback

if you're going to 24 bit, you should figure out a way to convert them, whether it's using an outboard DAC or if you have a home theater receiver, chances are it could have a 24 bit DAC built into it and you can run a digi-signal into it.  that's what i used to do pc>receiver via digi-coax.  or just go get yourself a dvd-a player and dvd-a software will be gapless within the next week hopefully.

Yeah, i thought about that. Currently, I go digi into my rec'ver  from my 5 cd changer (optical), and also from my 300CD Changer (optical) and also from my dvd player (coaxial)
How can i figure out if it will accept 24 bit? Just gotta try it?

well i've been taping for years, but i donno much about the 24 bit thing, dvd-r, dvd+r, dvd-A....   ???
I'm thinking for now i'll just record 24 bit and back it up onto hard disk, and save for a dvd burner. Hopefully by the time i'm ready they will have all agreed on 1 standard...

first i gotta foot the bill for the laptop

my guess is that your receiver can decode 24 bit (what is the brand/model?).  i think 24 bit is part of the dvd standard.  as far as dvd-a goes, well that's a subject for another time, there are some other threads on that on here.

ok as far as the original question goes, ive listened to just about every bose speaker and i even own a few that i now use in my bedroom with an old receiver so i can have decent surround.  when i compare them to other speakers, swans, b and w's and so on, i find them to be lacking.  for 200 bucks if you want to throw them in a room that isnt your primary listening space but you still want good sound at an affordable price, then go for it- as for your critiquing speakers I'd save your money.

For the record....my parents have one of those 500 dollar bose wave radio/cd player deals and it sounds pretty good.  It lacks the bass response you need for some of your boomier type tapes, but otherwise is perfect for the bedroom, the garage while cleaning, etc.

And it is small enough to take everywhere, has rca inputs etc.

That was my point...  you can take to the hotel and listen with everyone at the same time instead of passing around headphones.  Also makes for better background noise than listening to other folks snore.

when it comes to Bose products, i remember the motto "Bose blows".

buying Bose is a waste of money.  there is a plethora of finer quality speakers at an affordable price.
