Tascam DR-100 mkii or Sony PCM-D50?
« on: June 18, 2014, 05:58:51 PM »
There are only a few portable recorders with digital input, so I'm considering the DR-100 mkii and Sony D50 to use with USBPre2.  Price aside, what is better sound quality using digital inputs?  I've had issues with the first DR-100 and recording errors, but hopefully the mkii is better.  The DR100 also has xlr inputs which is nice if I need to record w/o the USBPre2.  The Sony looks like a better build quality, but is it worth it as bare bones quality recorder?  Is the sound quality any better using the digital input than the DR-100's digital input?  Sound quality is my main concern, other features (or lack there of) secondly...  any quirks with these two recorders?

Thanks

I wouldn't think there would be any difference if you were feeding both the same digital signal from a USBpre2. I would go for the D50 if only on the grounds of battery life, which is vastly superior to the Tascam.

The Tascam has a rechargeable internal battery though, the Sony does not.

Yeah, but it doesn't last very long.

Surely, d50

1. hyper battery life
2. may be someday you'll need int mics, they are 999999999999 times better, than tascam
3. build quality
4. it's a sony))

For what it's worth...

I LOVE my DR-100mkII. I held off on buying the first model because of the lack of a line input on the XLRs. The digital input was another big consideration for me. I've been transferring DATs: Sony TCD-D8 >S/PDIF >Tascam DR-100mkII. It's worked like a charm, so far.
