In the Leaving mics outside overnight (http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,115183.0.html) topic, I mentioned the Behringer C2 mic pair, since they sound good and are only $90. My only gripe with them is self-noise is a little high for ambient & quiet acoustic instrument work, however everyone needs a pair of disposable condensers IMO :)
Behringer just launched what looks to be the next step up...EDIT $99 USD...3 dB more sensitive at C2 = -41 dBV vs C4 = -38 dBV. If the S/N is similarly improved these should be a steal.

Hey Digifish, Could we get a sample of your c2's while waiting for the specs on the c4 to show up?
Thanks!

You can listen to a field recording of some ducks here... http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=39712 :)
And the sea http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=41313 , nice way to hide self noise :P
I don't have any concerts tho. Just looking through my archives for stuff recorded with them...

too brash...electret-ish sound...thin...Illconditioned took one apart and published a rather dismal review of their electronics.
my only outing with them:

"electret sound" ::) . . . the C4 is an externally biased condenser, as all of Behri's C range are . . . in fact, I think their only electret is the ECM8000.
And so? - Im characterising the sound...not the technology

They are an electret mic. That is not what makes them bad.. there are a lot of good electrets out there, including many of the DPA 40xx series! The problem is that it is a poor quality capsule, and poor quality electronics. Not terrible, but not worth using for a recording either. Where would I use these? As a pair of live mics, eg., on an out of tune upright piano. Then you don't care if they're ripped off.

Heres some more C-2 recording from a pair of C-2's into a R09 sound ok to me...
http://www.archive.org/details/gertrude2007-11-27.flac16
http://www.archive.org/details/gertrude2008-08-06.flac16
...I can certainly hear the rooms in these, much bigger issue than the mics.

You are characterizing a technology as having a sound, when it does not. Does a Shure KSM32 sound like a DPA4061? Do both of these mics sound like the C4?
Fine - they sound like all my old radio shack electret mics...better?? Sorry - I forget there are actually good electrets mics...
Screw it - I stand by my orginal remarks - make total sense in the context...Im sure no one was confused...

Sure I've got some radio shack mics that sound "ok" too...
Not to make it a contest - but I strongly recommend NEVER OWNING a pair of C-2s
I always thought it would be cool to get a C-2 kit and just use the parts...send the whole thing to Chris Church and have him basically build a pair of his mics in those bodies...cool kit if you were trying to DIY something...

So you don't like my duck recording? ;D
Although I don't use them very often, my experience differs. I am quite happy with everything I have recorded with them, being aware of the self noise issue. I spend a lot of time doing things like burying mics under a pile of seed so chickens can peck at them etc so I am glad I have a pair of reasonable sounding mics that are expendable. They definitely sound better than the internal mics in most of the portable recorders out there.
Anyhow, this post was about the C-4's, they seem to have improved the sensitivity and so (I expect) S/N ...

Life is too short to record with cheap microphones. I do realize we all would like to find an inexpensive mic set that would do the trick AND do it well... Whats in your mic locker?
-
I own a pair of mid seventies sony electrets that I LOVE! ECM-260F to be exact. I have made some great tapes with them and love them in the studio.

Yeah that would be cool..... I am now modifying 1inch mics like Studio projects and AT 2020 mics and putting in real capsules :)

Make the mic heads small enough to use like "actives" and you'd have a real winner. Sign me up!

Now there are two different budget mics called C4.
These look promising, but I guess they all do in the beginning.

Hey Chris,
Sounds good. If you get a chance, I wouldn't mind seeing a picture of the AT2000 series capsule.
