Anyone know anything about the SP-CMC-25?
« on: August 10, 2009, 02:56:23 PM »
Anyone know anything about these small hypers:  http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/SP-CMC-25?  I had never seen or heard of them before, so I thought I'd ask...Curious who manufactures them, how they sound, etc...

yeah I received the email from Sound Pro about these. I think they are brand new so I doubt anyone knows much about them, at least on this board.

Looks like these mics accomplish the same thing as hyper-cardioids.
Busman Audio BSC1-K1/K2/K3/K4 > HiHo Silver XLR's > Deck TBD

I'm assuming that they're a fixed at hyper card cap?  Not a lot of info.

Hello:

The info you are looking for is on our website here:

http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/SP-CMC-25

These mics are our design and they are only available as Super Cardioids - similar with Hyper Cardioids, but even more directional. They are for situations where you want the maximum audience noise rejection.

They are on introductory special this week (until 8-14-09). The response has been overwhelming already, but we should be able to fill all orders this week for folks that need them by the weekend.

Hope this helps!

Best Regards,

As I was curious about these mics, I e-mailed Chris Carfagno about them this morning; I pointed him to this thread since I thought others might also be interested.  His e-mail response did contain one small detail that his post here did not, though:  when they are available, the graphs on these will be added to the website...I assume that will include frequency response and polar plots.  I would like to see how they look, particularly that rear lobe!

Ditto on all counts.

As I said in the other thread, I'd like to know what capsules are in these.  $300 is a high price, unless we know what we are getting inside.  I'm interested to hear samples of course.  Another thing, I notice that they seem rather sensitive (ie., high output level).  This would be good for flash recorders with limited gain, such as Edirol R09.

Dear Chris,

No offense, but you don't actually *manufacture* the capsules, right?

If you cannot tell me who makes them, can you say something about their construction?  For example, are the diaphragms gold vapourized or something else?  Could you say something about how they sound compared to AT853 and family?  How do they compare to Sennheiser MKE40?  We may expect some unknown caps in cheaper models, but at $150 each, I'm hoping to get something good.

Hello:

We are having these mic capsules custom made for us exclusively, to our specifications. They are not a re-packaged well-known brand microphone.

So, to answer your questions, we do not make the capsules in our shop in NJ, but the matching, final assembly and testing is done here in the USA. They sound similar to the AT853 and AT943 mics we sell, but have a tighter pickup pattern. I do not know how they would compare to the Sennheiser mics as I have not heard the Sennheisers. These mics are significantly smaller than most of the other 'mini' cardioids found on the market and discussed on this board.

As you probably know, using a well-known brand capsule does not guarantee good sound quality (although it usually gives you a reasonable expectation of some minimum level of quality) - good design and quality manufacturing does. Sometimes, 'unknown' capsules can sound good, too :-)

Lastly, we have added some information to our website about these mics here:
http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/SP-CMC-25

We offer these with a 30 day money back guarantee.

ditto on the "loaner program" idea.  We all have a lot of love for soundpro's, but i think this would go far in terms of sales and dedicated customers in the long run...  That's why Church audio (IMHO) beyond the fact that he makes damn good mics at an affordable price, but because he is willing to put them out on the market and let the customers feedback help others in choosing a future purchase, has really given us a good alternative to soundpro's and Audio Technica Mics.
