Pre-amp; which one to choose??
« on: May 10, 2007, 04:29:53 AM »
I got my DPA4061 & MPS6030 underway, but I'm thinking on buying an pre-amp
as well. Have some questions though;

1. Is it necessary to have a pre-amp with this rig? What does it do?
   I'm taping with a Microtrack 24/96..

2. Which would be the best for me? Thinking on a Sound Devices MP-1,
   or a Sonosax SX-M2..

What is your budget, are you mostly going to be doing stealth or open taping.

Sonosax is easily the better of the two pres you have listed, but you'll be hard pressed to find it for less than $700 US on the used market.

If the conversion site I used is correct 100 euro is about $135 in the US, like stated in the previous post the Sonasax retails for $700 so I doubt if you will find one on the secondary market for less than $250-300.

The Sound Devices MP-1 retails for about $300 so you might find one used in the yard sale in tour price range.

Actually, the SX-M2 retails for $1,056.00 which is up from the $950 it was when I got my first one 7 years ago.

You should check out a Church Audio preamp.  They are cheap and good quality and very stealthable.

Ok, the MP-1 seems to be mono, and the MP-2 stereo. If I'm informed right the MP-2 can't be bought
anymore (??). Is it wise then to buy a MP-1? Does it give a mono-signal to my MT24/96?

Need some help here..

Are there any other pre-amps out there which don't cost me that much?

For about twice as much as the price you are looking at theBeyer Dynamics MV100  is an excellent pre - folks here like the Church Audio ST line and they go for under 200 - as to the MP-1, it is an excellent device and more expensive than your other options AND it is mono ( one channel/ mic only ) It was meant for film work.  I don't think this is what you are looking for.  I'll be glad to trade you my mv100 Beyer for your MPS6030 if that offer appeals to you. Church Audio can put microdot connectors and pluging power on it and you are set  -pm me

I think you meant MixPre if you need th stereo version of the MP-1 (MP-2 has been discontinued). You never thought of MMA6000? It was made for the 406X mics. The SD preamp is really for the bigger mics which need phantom power.

If you run 4061>MMA6000>MT that will be a better option for you (cheaper than the Sonasax and SD preamp).

OH...yes I think Church-Audio sells a preamp similar to the MMA6000, but don't know how that compares to the DPA one.

I have a MIC2496 in the yardsale:

http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,83736.0.html

I've run HEB's (DPA4060's) with it, the jumpers can be set on the inside for plug in power.  Also has a built in A/D so you could feed your M/T a digital signal instead of using its A/D.  Not sure if its in your price range.

DPA 4021 >SD MP-2>Sony PCM M10

Church Audio Cardoids>Edirol R-09

Has anyone with DPA 4060/4061's been able to hear and compare the MMA6000 with a Church Audio pre?  I hear great things about both...
