Anyone ever looked into the SM98 line? If I remember right I ran into a guy a few years ago running some SM98's that he said he had been running since the 90's (he actively tapes Pearl Jam - I believe his name was Kurt O. From WI). Anyway, he sent me some discs of a recent show and I was pretty impressed. I asked him about the mics later on and he said they quit making them so im assuming this is a new line. Sweetwater has the 98A/C for a decent price.

    * Sensitivity (at 1kHz, open circuit voltage): -48.0 dBV/Pa (4.0 mV)
    * Maximum SPL (1kHz at 1% THD) 1,000 ohm load: 144dB
    * Signal-to-Noise Ratio (referenced at 94dB SPL at 1kHz): 64dB
    * Dynamic Range (at 1kHz) 1,000 ohm load: 114dB
    * Common Mode Rejection (20Hz-20kHz): >50 dB
    * Clipping Level (1kHz at 0.25% THD): 1,000 ohm load: 1.0dBV (1.26V)
    * Self Noise (typical, equivalent SPL, A-weighted): 30dB SPL
    * Polarity: Positive pressure on diaphragm produces positive voltage on pin 2 with respect to pin 3
    * Weight: 0.6 oz.
    * Connector: 3-pin XLR, male, balanced
    * Power Requirements: 11-52Vdc phantom, 3.6mA

They also have a super-card version the 98/s...

Anyway, have just been thinking about snagging a tinybox sometime myself and thought this would make for a pretty slick setup..
SM98A/C > custom minixlr cable > Tinybox > M10. I would love to hear your thoughts or samples (I doubt they exist). This may be a route I look into. I will have to dig out Kurts discs he sent me awhile back and have another listen but from what I remember they sounded really good!

Thoughts?

Nice, compact design.  The frequency response is more geared for drums, percussion and horns so it may prove a bit thin recording from our usual distance from sound sources.

I am, however, very interested in the shockmount as it could provide potential uses for many small (or active) setups here:

Yeah, that little shock mount is cool.
Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.
