CF/SD cards and recorders (who has good/bad luck w/what ?)
« on: January 29, 2008, 05:43:13 PM »
of all the current FLASH based recorders, and the known working brands for various CF, SD cards.
any interest in that?

I've tried my hand at a few cards in various decks.  I think it would be a good resource.
For example..I'm shopping for a card for 24bit recording.  I'd like it to be 8gb or more.  its for a fostex.
what should I stay away from ?
ADATA ?
Transend ?
those two are mentioned because they are typically the least expensive in any given retail line up.

I've got a marantz PMD660 right now and I've had the following results:

working cards:  sandisc 2gb, Transend 4gb
non working cards:  sandisc 4gb, sandisc ultra II 4g (likely counterfeit)

I bet any of my "non working" cards would have worked fine in this pending Fostex deck.
the 660 is just picky.

After switching the 16gb card with a Transcend 4gb type 6 card, I have not encountered the issue again.

What qualifies as "works"?  One person trying it with one card and one recorder with no formal testing, just ad hoc experience?  Three people?  Someone with the time and knowledge to perform formal testing?

Seems obvious, and maybe unnecessary, but I think it's a good idea to include a disclaimer of some kind that results may vary.

Have fun and good luck!

I have a pair of regular Sandisk 4GB that have run flawlessly over and over for me in a WCM660.
...after replacing the first one I got, which magically died on the first outing  :P

Microtrack 1

Kingston Elite PRO 2GB (45X - CF/2GB-S) no issues, recorded a 20 or so times
Transcend 8GB (120X - TS8GCF120) 'media is full' warning, works if REC pushed again, used 4 times.

I really suggest people get the part number or model number as a part of this survey, there seems to be some variations within a manufacturer's product line for the same sized cards.

I would think that if you own a deck and a certain CF card, you'd know if it works or not.  no matter if you tested it thoroughly or just practical use in the field taught you that its stable, or not.
so, end user stability I'd guess is the factor.

Some issues don't arise right away.  Some issues require certain conditions to be met, which a user may only run into occasionally.  Some cards may work with the same recorder for one person, but not another.  Lots of variables to consider.  Basically, I don't think people should consider a list like this the definitive, authoritative source.  That said, it's certainly useful as an anecdotal guide, and I think that's your intent.  But I just want to caution people to not put too much stock in it, and do their own testing, since I've far too often seen a single person say X, Y, or Z on TS and all of a sudden TSers everywhere are touting that X, Y, or Z is definitively true.

I agree. One thing to keep in mind is that the manufacturers will sometimes change the "guts" of their flash components and not reflect the difference in any way on the packaging... i.e. what works today, may fail tomorrow (or vis versa).

chances are greater if i card works for most people it will work for you and if i card doesn't work for most people it will prob not work for you

you could look at any website including fostex for example where they tested __ card and it worked for them but doesn't for you

of course their is the chance a card will work for one and not another but if i see 10 people say the kingston works and one that doesn't compared to 5 that say the sandisk works and 5 that say it doesn;t i will take my chance with the kingston first

anyway i think the point is to have a thread with as much info on cards working or not to makwe it easier for people when searching for info
instead of reading 50 threads

im curious if anyone has noticed a negative difference in card speeds.  like does the 133x have more self noise than the 45x.
what are the pros and cons of higher speed?  im running the fr2le and need to get some 4gig cards to handle 24bit

i know the MT1 did NOT care for higher speed cards
it worked much better with 40Xish cards over 133Xish
as far as noise or anything i don't know
