Thanks Jonny, I thought so but I was thinking of picking up one for sale from everyones fave PGA tour rat. But wanted to be sure. Now that I have this iBook I'm looking to try and build me my 24 bit rig for under $1000.

You can't run the dat as backup when doing 24 bit with the UA-5.

I think you could, but you'd just truncate the extra bits, right? So I guess teh effective answer is no anyway. /ramble. ;)

lots of people run DAT as a backup while recording 24bit via USB. I'm just not one of them....
Governor Jim McGreevey was equally disturbed about the upcoming population increase. "New Jersey cannot support all of these wookies," he said. "For starters, we don't have nearly enough kindbud. At best, we can muster up a Q.P. of some beasties, but we've not a dime-bag more."

Yes, you can - as Tube says, it would just truncate the extra 8 bits.  I bet most folks here wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a dithered and truncated recording.  At any rate, truncated recording is better than no recording, IMO.

I ran the JB3 as backup once while recording 24 bit. It came out fine. Seems like a waste of tape to do back up dat. To each his own :)

I pretty much always ran a DAT backup. It;s what I have and I usually just retread old DAT tapes anyway. I'm really conident my iBook will work fine as battery life was the issue with my old PC laptop. Now that this iBook is rated at 6 hours. WHile taping should be able to pull it off. Plus I'll probably get a valence at some point.

I'd actually like to hear a 24bit vs dithered 16 bit vs truncated 16 bit source. Could be interesting, plus it wouldn't really be much work.

(No Skalinder, I'm not volunteering & I won't report back with the results.)  ;)

Is this refering to the oade mod in which i am sure all three outputs are functional but what if it is a home digi-mod are all three still functional.

I guess i could just go plug mine in but i am just that lazy(i have no way to test coax but i could do usb and opti.).

The digi mod effects the usb in that it will not send a signal back through to your usb for monitoring.  For most of us this is a non-issue.  It does become an issue if you are multi-tracking and want to play and record at the same time.  So if you record some tracks into Cubase or Nuendo and want to record and playback at the same time, it won't work.  That is why a switchable digimod is so desireable.

As for using the d8 as a backup on 24bit.  I've done it many times and it sounds fine.  You have to make sure your sending it a 48khz signal and your dat is set on 48khz also.

I really wish Oade put a switch in for it, but they remove the resistor.  I couldn't add a switch if I wanted to :(.

according to the DIY instructions for the digi-mod, you dont remove any resistor, you just cut 1 trace and a jumper

You have a choice about removing the resistor or cutting the trace.  Both are effective ways of 'breaking' the signal path.  I opted to cut the trace because it can be repaired easily with a trace pen if you change your mind.  I do not know how to solder SMD resistors back in place with a good old fashioned soldering iron.

Doug Oade had posted emphatically that you should not cut the trace.  His opinion.   Most of the UA-5s that get messed up by DIYers have a problem with the jumper, not the cut trace.  With the jumper, the soldering work is close to some other traces and a little dribble of extra solder in the wrong place will interfere with the s/pdif output.  It's pretty easy to tell because the optical light will not come on.   Nothing permanent - you just have to clean up your work (don't ask...)

You completely misread me.  I have an Oade digi-mod... they physically remove something from the board.

yea, i got a solder pen and lifted the lid only to discover that the resister was removed. Oh well, I prolly would have screwed something up anyhow, it's a LOT smaller then the pictures look. I can hold off another month for this unit. http://www.edirol.com/products/info/fa101.html
