NAD C350 or B&K ST140 with MMG's??
« on: May 25, 2004, 12:59:56 PM »
OK,

I ordered the mmg's today.  I can get a NAD C350 integrated amp for $275 or a B&K ST-140 power amp for $230.

I can use just use the st-140 and then use my D/A as a preamp, but Im sure that the preamp in the NAD is better then the output level knob on my Lucid D/A.  Of course, the st-140 delivers more power to those mmg's, which is also important.

Any opinions on what I should do??

John

how much more power are we talking about?

I have a NAD370 that I love but I'm also not trying to drive Maggies with it...

i'm not familiar with the nad350 but i've been very happy with the symphonies > st-140 > mmg combination.  if you can find the st-140 for $230 i'd jump on it.  as always just my .02

ok, im telling you, you will not be able to push your maggies with the wattage on the nad

at 60wpc it aint gonna cut it for a 4ohm speaker.

john, if you aren't set on buying it right away im going to have mine for sale in a few weeks.  i know which one you are looking at on audiogon, and i might be a touch wary.  there have been at least 3 generations of this amp, i have the second, i know many people on here have the third, and the one on audiogon is the first (i believe).  it is certainly the earliest generation i've seen in a long time.  make sure to ask that seller plenty of questions regarding the history of that amp :-)

I don't understand why it wouldn't??  If 100w is OK for an 8ohm speaker wouldn't 60w be OK into 4ohm??  Less resistance?   ???

It has both RCA & XLR input, 105 wpc, detached power
cord, and is in perfect working condition. 7/10 is
because of the age (approx 5-7 years old).

now some of them only have rca input?  and also i thing that they have been making them for more than 10 years which makes me believe that this has to bee newer than 1st gen.  but Im not sure.

im not absolutely but i know it is of the older generations because of the faceplate.  i have one that is about 5 years old and it is the black faceplate with gold writing, before that i believe was colored writing and currently it is black faceplate with handles and gold writing.

as per the power, the maggies really need at least 80 if not 100+ wpc to operate in their full dynamic range.  i cannot recall the exact numbers and i tried calling magnepan for it, but the mailbox of the person is full.  you might want to check this out for yourself.

their phone number is as follows:
800-474-1646

the reason i ruled out the nad as not pushing the maggies is that with that little power into them (they are some power hungry speakers) you aren't even close to operating in their full dynamic range.  why buy a speaker and not use its range?

i think jonny's right and the guy is selling an early version of the amp.  i know mine is a later version and has the silver handles with gold writing and only has rca inputs.  you might want to check out ebay as well, i've seen a couple go very cheap there.

"at 60wpc it aint gonna cut it for a 4ohm speaker"

NAD rates their watts extremely conservatively.  I know people running 50 watt NAD receivers (NAD 742/743) with maggies.  I'm not sure how the NAD C350 would handle it, but based on how their receivers can handle them, i would assume/guess the amp could as well.

even rating conservatively, i doubt they are rating 100w at 50 (wouldnt make much sense), then those with maggies aren't getting their full dynamic range out of them

Yours may.
there are several generations of the ST-140.  The originals were 70wpc.  I know that there was a 100w version as well, that must be what you have.
You see these come through ebay and agon all the time.  Nice to know that there is a backup amp that sounds soo good for soo little money available almost any time you need it used.

I always wondered about the other ST modles.  Like the 2140.
mmm......B&K!

my st140 monoblocks were rated at 105 wpc into 8 ohms.  I had the black with gold handles and lettering, fixed power cord, unbalanced rca input.
