I bought one of these and haven't used it yet...

Why the 3.5 vs XLR?

I have a DR-100 and FR-2LE - will the XLR (balanced) activate the preamps on the recorder?  (Which would defeat the purpose of the mixpre)  if not, the balanced xlr digital connection would be preferred over the unbalanced mini-jack analog input yes?

or XLR out > TRS input?

I have a MixPre-D and use the AES output to feed my recorder.  This leaves the 3.5mm line out for handing out a patch, feeding a backup recorder or for a tap to stream live.

When I ran my sax I went XLR>mini m10. But now I'm just running my LB, I run mini>mini m10

Well, the preamps are deactivated when using TRS/Line Level input to the Fostex FR-2LE, so that's what I will use, however I will also use the tape out to record to the Tascam DR-100 and A/B compare.
