I have friends in a band who are in need of someone to start recording their shows and keeping an archival vault. Is all I really need a DAT recorder, a cable, rechargeable batteries, and blank media? PLMK, all your help is appreciated ???

You got it.... I'd look over on the Oade board (www.oade.com) at the Used Gear section... Decks are always for sale there and usually at reasonable prices... just remember though, if this is what you are doing then get a deck that can handle analogue ins (not just digi ins) so you can tape off any board.

i would definately look into getting a DAP1. then you have your RCA in/out for analog rather than a miniplug on a D8. now can you use the XLR as an analog in on the DAP1? anyone? i got a D8.

unfortunatly, i mean fortunatly i have a family, so san diego wasn't exactly conveniant for me. i would have liked to go. sny issues with taping? would like to hear em. happy turkey day to ya. PEACE

I second the notion to get a p1. Much more versitle and sturdier than a sony portable IMO.

i do sound for a local jamband here in illinois
just the basic setup i use to tape them is a Behringer Eurorack MX802A mixer
it is an 8 channel mixer, i mix guitar-bass-mics on drums-feed from keyboards- and a feed from the p.a. system
this works pretty good for the budget we had at the time
i am getting ready to upgrade the mixer to something with a digi-output for the laptop setup i am throwing together now

first make sure you're getting a reliable board feed. Ask if you can mix your own feed off of an extra AUX send or if the board has a matrix see if they can set you up with that.

When I did sound I recommended this all the time. No tapes to organize, no transferring. Record to harddrive, edit and burn all in one nice machine. Cutting out the bullshit!
I called the Oade's regarding using this for a band's archive before and they highly recommded it and offered to give a price break because it was for a band. Good luck!

Tim I'm gonna have to go against you here. Stay away from the Alesis stuff. Another 3rd rate knockoff that doesnt sound worth its cost.

let's see...we went from a simple board->DAT idea to a 24-bit multitrack HD recorder...gotta love ts.com :) :)

he really needs a mini disc. that would take care of everything he needs. than he could compress 5 hours into one little disc. perfect, and circulate it!

Hey now, MDLP only compresses up to 4hrs. They aren't that good! :P
