where can i find headphone jacks with leads?
« on: September 17, 2011, 12:53:40 AM »
Sorry if this is confusing, but say I'm trying to make a battery box.  now i need a male mini jack at then end.  i've been using old headphone jacks from dead headphones because they're smaller than buying something like a neutrik plug, but would like to know if there's a place i could buy something like this, rather than, say buying a new pair of headphones and hacking the end.

You mean you need a male mini 'plug' at one end. Jack is female.

There you go, price is right too.  (although the photo shows a RA mono cable)

You can also buy any stereo mini TRS (1/8" / 3.5mm) male to male extention cable with molded ends and cut the cable it in half.  That gives you two of them with whatever length cable you want.  Dollar stores & Radio shack sell them locally.

3.5mm straight

But the impulse buy section at walmart and "dollar" stores are about half that for cheapo headphones waiting to be harvested....

Be careful.  A lot of these cheap cables are not shielded.  They either run the shield along one side (not wrapped around the inner wires), or just have three identical wires.  Dollar store cables are almost certainly unshielded.  Many of the regular store ones are unshielded.  If you luck out and get a good set, buy a bunch of  them.

Good point Richard, I didn't consider that.  Almost certainly the case for cables scavenged from cheap headphones.

thanks for the link!  to be honest, the cheapo non-shielded cables work ok for me.  i should know better, maybe i just don't care enough.  :P
