New speakers tomorrow!!!
« on: February 26, 2004, 08:57:38 PM »
hey now...
gear sluttin' again!

My new Von Schweikert VR2's...though the best box speaker iv'e heard, are just not pushing engough air in my monsterous living room.

I lucked out and found a pair of original VR4's in mint condition...and in new england to boot!  I'm driving down to Chelmsford MA tomorrow to meet the seller, and coming home with these MONSTEROUS speakers!  The bass modules alone weigh 100lbs apiece!  These things are going to kick some SERIOUS aSS!
I am very pumped.  They should reproduce a big PA pretty faithfully.

Thank you Scott...for agreeing to buy my VR2s..hazlewood finish as been officialy ordered.  :)
Thank you Sarah (wife) for allowing me to get these VR4's before the 2's actualy have sold.
Lets hope this doestn' bite me in the ass.
Lets hope these VR4's do kick me there though.

Yes, these will be my 4th pair in a year.
I think the itch will be scratched this time though.  We'll see.  Maybe I just need to install a line array in my living room.

Scott Brown?

Nice pickup for everyone!

I good friend of mine has a set of 4's.  They have the cleanest most extended low end of any speaker I've heard - no boom at all, in fact I often think they are a bit thin in the lows only because I'm used to hearing boomy bass.  A test disc confirms they are definitely not weak.  They require a big room and plenty of air around them to sound best.  Split omni recordings give you that 'your there' effect when using the rear firing tweets.  congrats - you'll love 'em!

I know!
in my room, I can spread them 12', pull them out 5' into the room and still have 3' of space to each side wall.
listening position will be approx 13' away.
hows that !!
:)
I think these go down to 16 cycles.  that is waaayyyy low.
the problem i've had with any speaker in my room is that nothing can preasurize the air.  I have no back wall, and that is the issue.  I'm hoping that these will be able to produce the thump i'm looking for.  I'd imagine so, but we'll find out tonight.
:)

I think I'm going to refer to the same friend Craig mentioned. Listening to recordings at his place was fun, regardless of how many people were over there. It seemed like the entire room was in the sweet spot. He biamped his setup with SS for the lows and tubes for the highs. What are you using for yours?

I love my VR-1s so much, I convinced another friend to get a pair. I'm running mine with a PS Audio HCA-2 and he'll be running his (Monday!) with a pair of Channel Islands monoblocks.

No back wall? What kind of communing with nature house is this? ;)
Out of the game … for now?

They require a big room and plenty of air around them to sound best.

How big?  Is it actual distance or effect percieved space?

I've been going back and forth between the VR2 and VR4gII.  I found a great deal on a pair of VR4s but I'm worried about cramping their space.  I can't get room around them like Nick describes but the room has all kinds of doors/foyers so the effective percieved space is much bigger.

well, after an hour or so of listening to the VR4's...i can tell you this.

the vr2's are fucking awesome.
I have bass problems in my house.   I think my couch is in a "dead zone".
No back wall....open concept house.  the living room melts into the kitchen/dining room.  Its a ranch style house, so a very long rectangle w/the back part being the living room.

They sound better than the vr2s, much more power, way more air being moved.  The ambient tweeter is not anywhere near the volume of the VR2's.  Its adjustable, but these 4's cranked are about 1/3rd of the 2's volume.

I'm driving mine as follows:
Musical Fidelity CD-PRE 24 preamp / transport / DAC combo  >
Boulder Cable M-80 (cryo'd) IC w/bullet plugs >
McCormack DNA-1 power drive >
MIT term 3 biwires

Problem here, the biwires wont reach each set of posts (one is on the mid/tweet module and the other on the bass module).  I have to use a jumper of shit speaker wire to connect them together.  I have the biwires running directly into the mid/tweet driver.

I needs me two sets of speaker cables to run these, or I need a biwire pair that has a 30" split between the two pairs of leads.
Once those are in place, and I've had some time to adjust their position until i'm convinced i've found "the spot", I wont go into any more detail about them.
Even w/my 1/2 assed setup , i'm impressed, and happy.

i'm standing 30' away from the speakers from this perspective.  They are spaced 11' from center cone.  4' into the room.  3' on either side.
they are sounding rather fantastic on all of the studio dics ive been listening too.  Especialy my saturday morning vacuuming music...Stevie Wonder

there are advantages to that - you don't have p.o.'d neighbors knocking at your door at 3am to complain about the bass rattling their walls/windows.

I'd love that.

Luckily my apartment complex is full of undergrads so I never really get any complaints about my stereo being too loud!
