IMO the Nomad is a step in the next direction of live recording, but it still needs help.  I believe on the newer model, it now has digi in.  The only way to transfer the digital signal is through USB.  USB is still not the best transfer medium.  There's talk of a fireware conection, and firware is much better than USB.  The compression is worse than MD, and I believe it saves a MP3.  I think that it does also save the audio as microsoft wav file.  Not as good as a pure wav file, but better than MP3.  Keep watching, because the advancments in the field are growing faster and faster.  It appears that DAT is on the way out, but that is years to come still.

Okay, has anyone cecked out the new Jukebox 3?  It appears that the only it doesn't have compaired to DAT is the 24bit.  It has monitors for both stereo channels, and digi/analog I/O.  Has anyone used one of these?

There is quite a bit of info on the OADE board about taping with this... Doesn't do 24 bit, but it does go bit for bit...I won't say this will replace DAT but it might replace MD.    Doug Oade makes a good point on there about the concept of removable media.  Not every show we tape needs to be moved to CD.  Nice part about DAT is you can remove the DAT and leave it for later and not be worried about taking up space :-)

Very true, but let's put aside the "archiving" aspect of this and talk of it replacing other mediums.  I've seen the discussion on the Oade board, and it's getting heated.  But no one is talking about how well it works in the field.  I know that the SPDIF cable has been know to cause some problems, but my experience on the SPDIF cable, is you need a right angle one.  How caomparable is it to DAT sound wise?  I know MD grabs about 80% of the sound, which is not bad at all.  Is this grabbing 100% like DAT?  It as  digi out via the USB and firewire.  If someone has a great set of mics, pre, and a/d, this thing has some great potential!

Michael,

Honestly- instead of spending 400 dollars on this, Id rather save my money for a few more months and buy a laptop.  we are now seeing laptops (good ones) for field recording being configured for as low as 5-600 dollars.  If you are gonna go half way, why not go all the way and get something you can do everything on!  (plus I can watch dvd's on mine during the plane rides home from some of my further away shows :-) )

id just check out ebay... anythign p3 + 128 mb ram 12 gig hard drive or more.  those should be your minimums.  also make sure you will be able to acquire a phat battery for it as well (take the manufacturers time on the battery and divide it by 3 to get actual recording time out of the battery)

the JB3 can record .wav files @ 16bit 32/44.1/48k, has TOSLINK mini input that is bit accurate (sometimes not).

3 hour max record time per file.  About 15 seconds to stop (auto save) and start new file.

can record from powered mics (battery box driven) and can add gain to this mic/line feed.

and it has replaced my DAT decks.

offloading the recordings is done via very slow USB or very fast firewire.  No soundcard needed, no bit accurace transfer concerns, no head ware, no heads! , no tapes..etc.

the arguement about "storing dat tapes" is sort of bogus, IMO.  I can store the SHN files that I make in all of 5 minutes on a $.29 CD-R just as easily.
well, I guess it's not as easy as hitting "eject"...but give me a break.

you can get them new for $275 if you look around enough.  try priceline or pricegrabber.

I know MD grabs about 80% of the sound, which is not bad at all.

Nope, MD throws away about 5/6 (~83%). ATRAC sucks.

I gave the JB3 its first run last nite at moe. and the dat is still for sale!
I was really happy with the controls and the ease of function.
I ran mc012>gp d-mic20(48k)>co2>jb3 (hypers ats)
The optical in is sturdy and can handle being shuffled around a good bit.

The battery life might be an issue at a festival, but 2 will suffice for about any show I think, and leave plenty of roo to spare.
I have only listened to half the first set and the second set and encore, but have heard no audible clicks pops dropouts, etc.

The level meters are lacking a bit, but do the job.

All in all I'm happy with my purchase so far and cant wait to get home tonite and transfer via firewire!!!
Thanks to all who gave input and advice...I love my new toy!!

The co2 is a format convertor used to convert spdif to toslink/optical.
Its made by m-audio. Nice small unit(about twice the size of a pack of cigarettes with the battery pack attached.

so its is for a uni that does not have a spdif out? like the Ua-5 has the optical outs so it does not need one?

Sooo, I have a little more Nomad news on my front.
I transferred my first show with the nomad last nite

Took a whopping 20 min. to transfer 2 80 min moe. sets via firewire and get them opened up in soundforge.

The software that comes with the nomad is a breeze.
It almost blew my mind!!!

I listened to the whole show and there is not a single audible porblem...to my ears anyway.

I love my new toy more everyday!!!

Thats good to hear. Still need to decide on what i want to do, its so frustrating. JB3 or dat or other? ??? With the whole the JB3 gives dropouts or other audio noise, I'm getting kinda nervous. Also,I dont want to break the bank only to find out that what i bout is no longer going to be used.

Good news is you dont necessarily have to break the bank to get the nomad. I got mine for 279.00 with a 3 year warranty with a 50.00 rebate.
so I have 229.00 in a jukebox that is guaranteed for 3 yrs.
I.m trying to sell my d7 to recuop the money, and I'll pretty much come out even.
I'm not the serious all out audiophile, so the minor glitches are not gonna kill me(although I havent heard or seen any yet)...as time progresses and I invest more here and there I will upgrade from the jb3, but I dont see that anytime soon.

oh yeah the batteries are RIDICULOUS!!
I paid 72.00 for 2 spares...36.00 each, ouch!

yea 250-325 isnt bad. However for a new D8 its 630 + Seven pin + sound card so that kinda breaking the bank. I'm really just looking for something to learn on then upgrade. and i think the JB3 is the way to go...

I'm in the same boat, I only started taping a year ago and have had a md a dat and now a jb3.
I'm mostly looking for easy to use and maintain a high level of quality.
The jury isnt out yet, but I am super satisified with the jb3 for now.

and screw transfering dats!!!!!!!

what is everyone saying is so bad about the JB3? Does it just have a pop or click once in a while or does it lose like 1 second of recording?

Preliminary7 testing revealed one or two dropouts, miliseconds in nature, but still dropouts.  FWIW, the new firmware has apparently fixed these problems, so they should no longer be an issue.

D,

They still are an issue but rarely.  Also generally they are an issue with CO2s and other convertors, but not when goign opti or line in.

I've been running it as my primary since late December, and I'd put it right on par with most of the consumer portable DAT's out there.  It does have issues, but if you can look past that, you'll love it.  Two caveats, though:

1) You've got to have an optical signal- great for UA-5, Apogee, and ?zefiro users, but sucks for the rest of yall, since you've got to buy a converter, which is flaky at best in my experience.

2) Power issues.  Trying to run it off anything but internals isn't an easy task at all.

Bottom line:  I'm going to get a different HD box when they become availible, but I'll probably keep the JB3 for stealth.

Just to chime in, my Nomad has been 100% reliable when recording as long as I use battery and not wall power.  There is a bug in the nomad that will cause it to freeze occasionally when on AC power.  Not a problem for taping shows, obviously.

I have recorded 10+ shows with it without one dropout (the same can't be said for my lappy).

With 2 batteries, you should get 7+ hours recording.

The USB/firewire connection ROCKS.

I run a lappy at 24 bit almost exclusively now, but I'm keeping the nomad for situations where I don't want so much gear.  It is a fantatsic piece of hardware.  If it recorded at 24/96 I'd be in heaven!!

if you knew you were going to upgrade within a year or two to a 24/96 or laptop or something else, but i wouldnt count on it as a long term replacement.  I would go with it over an MD though.
