Which To Use: Pre-Amps Phantom Power or Battery Box?
« on: September 13, 2004, 04:48:38 PM »
i have a small sonic studios battery box,and im getting a pre-amp with phantom power. would it be wise to use sonic studios batt box to power my mics or should the i use the pre-amps phantom power to power the mics?

would  i get better results with the mics having there own power supply which the pa-6 goes with the mics, than phantom. i know if i run phantom that the pre-amps battery power wont last as long.
what about the staic situations with the phantom?

which would be better for sound? not worried about the size of the battery box, which is small,  just the qauility of the recording.

which one is cool/good for best results
sonic mics>sonic studios pa-6(batt box)>pre-amp>neuros or
sonic mics>pre-amp(phantom power)>neuros

what is the difference in 12v phantom and 48v phantom? is it larger volts for bigger mics?

thank and jah blessings. oh man izzy vibes, barrington levy, morgan heritage,jr. reid, spearhead this sunday Doheny Days. any tapers doing Earth Dance?

yes the I needs the best results.

i'm not familiar with SS mics, so i'd suggest that you should first determine if those mics can be phantom powered.

IF they can be phantom powered, that would be the route to go :)

phantom provides more SPL's for the mics and also a wider dynamic range of music, so a more 'high quality' sound could be achieved this way, IMO

no sub-SD mics that I know of can directly take phantom.

A question for those who have both powering options available in your toolkit:

The popular AT miniature mics (AT943, AT853 etc) powered from a std. battery box, will yield a pretty hot signal suitable for direct connection to the line input on say a Sony D8.

Now I unplug, rewire and go the P48 route: Specifically AT943 -> PM4 -> PS-2. I take the signal straight from the output of the PS-2 and into the same line in on the D8. I keep the record level the same in both experiments.

And the question is: what happens to my digitized levels? Are they the same, 20 dB down or other?

Anyone?
