ua5 as an a>d?
« on: January 05, 2006, 01:25:52 PM »
I borrowed a friends VMS-5U for this weekend for a festival in which some bands allow taping and others won't. I borrowed it to go with a stealth Schoeps setup for the not so friendly artists. .  And if I wanted to use the UA-5 as an a>d and the VMS as the pre for the friendly artists only would I go xlr from the vms>1/4" in the front of the ua5 or XLR>rca in the back of the ua5?  I'm pretty sure you don't wanna go into the xlr or it will go through two pres...right?

i am pretty sure you could do either
but i would think rca would work better because if you went 1/4 then you would be hitting the ua5 pre too and have 2 sets of knobs to adjust
where if you go rca in it will get the exact signal and just convert it to dig to output to whatever you are using as a recorder
Mics - AKG ck61/ck63 (c480b & Naiant actives), SP-BMC-2
XLR Cables - Silver Path w/Darktrain stubbies
Interconnect Cables - Dogstar (XLR), Darktrain (RCA > 1/8) (1/8 > 1/8), and Kind Kables (1/8f > 1/4)
Preamps - Naiant Littlebox & Tinybox
Recorders - PCM-M10 & DR-60D

you would still need to adjust the trim pot on the rear of the ua-5 if using RCAs

Mark - set the input knob on the back of the UA5 to 12.  That is unity Im pretty sure.
CK1x, CK2x, CK3x > Hub Industry Cables > Naiant PFA or MK46 > 460B
CK1, CK8, CK63 > 460b

Isn't the RCA a padded input?  I think it's set at -10 db at full.

Hey now-

Just a fyi.  I ended up going digi coax out of the v3> coax of the UA5.  Worked fabulously.  Better than rca I think?  So basically I just used the UA5 as an interface to the PC.

The only issue with this is that there is a redundant resample step in the UA-5, but I don't see that as a real big deal.
