Hi all,
My brother recently upgraded his recording gear, and gave me
his Edirol R-1. Currently, I'm using it with the stock 64 mb Roland
branded compact flash, and with a 1 Gb Transcend card.
The Transcend card works well, however when the power supply
is used there's some noise tarnishing the recordings. I'd like to
use the R-1 with a 4 Gb cards. There's a Roland web site with
a list of compatible cards, but it seems outdated. I could also
find some posts on Taperssection, but the list dates back from
2005, so I'm not sure if these are still valid.
Finally, after reading some comments on a blog, I went and purchased
a 4 Gb Sandisk Ultra II Compact Flash. Unfortunately, the R-1
does not like it. Upon insertion, it says 'No songs', but when I try
to record, it just instantly stops the recording and did not even
create a file. I tried reformatting to FAT (and not FAT32), partitioning
it to a single 2 Gb partition, but to no avail. Note that I upgraded
the firmware to the 1.03 version available on Roland's web site.
So what compact flash still available on the market do you guys use
with the R-1 ? Thanks in advance for your help.

i used a sandisk 4.0gb ultra II card with no issues whatsoever.

Did you format the card in the R1 or on a PC?
Best to do it in the R1.

I've had no problems with the plain blue Sandisk, and the Sandisk Ultra II. I recently acquired a Sandisk Ultra III; it formats properly in the R1 but I haven't done any testing on it yet.
I had bad luck with the Kingstons. I tried the Kingston elite pro with the lizard, and one with the flower, but they won't format in the R1. I believe that other folks have had good results with the Kingston elite pro's. If you can find the older elite pro (no picture, just blue and white), I think that many folks have used that one.

I formatted both in the R-1 and on a PC. The formatting
operation is fine, the card is recognized, however as soon
as I want to record the recording stops with no file being
created. I even went as far as booting onto a Linux system
to repartition the card to use just 2Go, so that standard
FAT16 could be used.
I can try to put files on the card and see if I can read these.
I'll have another look. I bought the card from a shop on ebay
(price was not ultra cheap though, and the shop was UK based
and seemed reputable), and I'm wondering now whether it is
genuine or if it is a rebadged clone posing as a Sandisk. I'll
have to check this next weekend since I won't have access
during the week to the equipment to read the name of the
controller (I need a PCMCIA/CompactFlash adapter).
I'd be interested to know whether the Ultra III works in the R-1
though.

Hi all,
I finally ordered a Sandisk Ultra II 4 Gb from Amazon, and sure enough,
this works great with the R-1.

I ordered and used this from Amazon until my father-in-law hi-jacked my cf card for his camera and never gave it back:
Lexar CF8GB-80-708 8GB Platinum II Compact Flash
It had 80x write speed and didn't have any problems or issues. It formatted and worked well. I haven't experimented with 16GB or greater sizes yet, but will report when I have more info.

SanDisk Ultra II 15mb/s 8GB
Formats & works! Be careful of the fakes. It has to say "15 mb/s".
The Edirol R-1's onboard powering is weak. That's why it can't power up with newer 8GB flash cards.
