Title: Use a mic pre amp instead of phono pre-amp

Maybe a stupid question, but can you use a high quality mic pre-amp (such as a EAA PSP-2 or Grace preamp) as a replacement for a phone pre-amp when transfering vinyl

I would obviously need to apply a RIAA filter digitally in post.

I am pretty sure the INA103 (same family as what is in Grace V2/V3 and what is in my Grace) data sheet has a phono pre-amp circuit example on it - which beyond the RIAA portion is very similar to a pre-amp circuit.

Are phono out's technically balanced signals?

Does it matter if the cartridge is MM or MC (I know MC has a much lower output level - i.e. just turn the pre-amp up)?

Is there a dis-advantage to doing this (other then the multiple extra steps)?
