Title: Clipping at the Aerco Pre or the Speaker Stack?
Post by: Hypnocracy on August 29, 2016, 09:07:00 AM
Lockn' My Morning Jacket...easily the loudest set I recall at the festival. I open my master this AM and see what appears to be clipping.

Outputs were the RCA outs and gain setting on the Aerco was 24db...about what I consider normal for my Grace V2...at the DR680 switch set at Input Line and 0db gain on the Record Trim.

I guess I mistakenly thought that at 0db Record Trim I was seeing the Aerco output and controlling levels at the Aerco to watch for over driven/clipping inputs. DR680 was showing max levels at slightly above midway between 0db and -16db line on the meters (-6db?)

Could this be showing the subs clipping? Or have I been mistaken on how to set gain for the DR680 and the Aerco?

those don't look like clipped peaks to me.
are there noticeable "clicks" or "pops" in playback??

Can't hear pops or clicks...It is from the Kick Drum. Effect?

It sounds like it might have been one of those rare times when -24 gets you analog clipping. I've had it happen a couple of times. My ears bled.  :headphones:

Could this be Input Voltage related? The reason I ask is one of my Tekkeon's is loosing capacity and I know I used a backup that would only go to 7.2v on the display. All but one of my MP3450's voltage is set by dip switches and I had to use the Non-Dip Switch set backup that usually gets USB duty.

I've read thru the TS Aerco Pt 1 & 2 to find recommendations on setting levels between the two units...With the record trim on DR680 set at 0=Nominal +4 dBu (1.23 V) ??

From DR680 Manual:
INPUT switch set to LINE
Input impedance: 10 kΩ
Nominal input level: +4 dBu (1.23 V)
Maximum input level: +24 Bu (12.3 V)
Minimum input level: –27.5 dBu (0.05 V)

No info found on outputs for the Aerco...

^ Jerry told me that the output on the Aerco can put out 20 V peak-to-peak (+/- 10).

I don't know if this is of any help, but what type of gain do you have on your Aerco?  In my experience (and confirmed by Jerry), the values printed on the labels only apply to the Aercos with stepped gain switches.  If you have the continuously variable gain pots, those numbers don't apply and, additionally, the gain is not linear with the degrees of rotation of the knobs (if I recall, the changes get larger as you get towards the higher gain end).  Maybe worth checking to see if you were actually applying the amount of gain you intended?
