Interesting news that the 661 is headed for a third iteration. The 661 is a great recorder! I have an original 661 and a 661MKII. Rather than investing in a 661 MKIII, I am still holding out hope for a PMD-706 Six Channel Recorder...

Am I missing something...this looks exactly like the PMD561? AH I see it now "S/PDIF Digital Input for connection to other audio equipment" and one hour longer on a set of batteries..
I'm with you dactylus...bring on the PMD-706
PMD661MKIII

In the stated information, I didn't see any mention of a digital input on the 661mkIII.

I looked at both manuals the PMD 561, and the PMD 661 MKIII, and while I only skimmed it, it appears the only difference is that the PMD 661 MKIII has the encrypted recording capacity. A few pages were arranged differently, but that was all I saw that differentiated the 2 models. They both have the same S/PDIF bit bucket ability.

This probably doesn't mean much to most people, but I just noticed the original 661 was made in Japan, and the MKII and MKIII are made in China. I recall in 2011 the Denon/Marantz factory was closed after being heavily damaged in the earthquake/tsunami that year, and the production had to be moved due to the extent of destruction. I wonder if that explains it, or the Inmusic purchase of Marantz is the reason. I'm old so I have a negative view of anything made in China due to that fact genuinely indicating something was "cheap" and lesser quality, but I expect what was true in the '90s and prior no longer holds true today. Interesting nonetheless.

Marantz Pro and Denon Pro got sold to InMusic three years ago.
Word of caution: "They're not your father's Marantz...."
