Replacing HDD with SSD
« on: March 30, 2010, 04:49:49 PM »
Hi:  Newbie here.  What a great resource.  Has anybody replaced the hard drive in their recorder with a new solid state drive?  If so, how should the drive be formatted?  Are there any special procedures or precautions?  This is a general question, but I am specifically thinking of this change for an Edirol R-4 Pro.  Thanks, Mike

You are probably out of luck as the R4 Pro requires a PATA drive and there are few out there that are SSD's.  Those that are typically are 16GB drives and the larger ones (128GB) are $400.    From a cost standpoint buying a regular off the shelf drive is probably your best best.  Keep in mind your battery savings are small.  Your money would be better spent on a battery solution.

Thanks.  PATA.  good to know.  FYI, I could care less about the battery savings as I have plenty o power.  Doing this mainly for the shock proofing and reliability of SSDs.  Newegg's got a 64g drive for about $200 (temporarily out of stock) that might work.  Now the question is how to format it....

Techs at Roland were no help.  They wanted to hear back from me if I got it to work!  Ha!

FWIW, I opened up the unit.  The HDD is a fujitsu mhv2080at.  A quick check shows that replacements can be had for $50 on ebay and other online stores.  You can also substitute 100 and 120 gig HDDs in this series.  This is from the Fujitsu manual (http://www.fujitsu.com/downloads/COMP/fcpa/hdd/mhv2xxxat_maint-manual.pdf):

Capacity
(user area)
Mounting screw Order No.
MHV2120AT 120GB M3 Depth 3 CA06557-B042
MHV2100AT 100GB M3 Depth 3 CA06557-B040/B140
MHV2080AT 80GB M3 Depth 3 CA06557-B038/B138/B148
MHV2060AT 60GB M3 Depth 3 CA06557-B026/B126/B136
MHV2040AT 40GB M3 Depth 3 CA06557-B124
