I tried out my new HX9V in Chicago this week.   Is it a replacement for my full size camcoder?  No... but it fits in my pocket and performs quite well for what it is.  I think I miss manual focus more than anything.  And the zoom is too fast - I was unable to get smooth, slow zooms.

I had a lot of fun with the panorama photo feature, although I haven't perfected its use yet.  It seems to lose a little vertical coverage in that mode.  I got some nifty Chicago skyline pics and a panoramic view of the Evanston SPACE, where Kaki King was playing.

Here is a video of Kaki King that I shot.  The camera is hand held and nearly fully zoomed.

I've got one on the way to me now. Not totally sold on the audio, but it seems to be a better upgrade to the ZS3 than anything else out there now...

I took my HX9v to Colbie Caillat last night
Full Auto and this was a VERY dark show so if you want to judge low light performance this is a good example

How does it look on a  HDTV? I recorded robin trower in a low light club setting in auto with -2 ev and the noise level is to me unacceptable...looks like interference, which is typical of any camera with the gain at max.Im sure eventually sony will give a wider range of control on these pocket cams but i wont hold my breath as that would eat into there prosumer camera lineup.Even on the most expensive consumer cx 550 you can not lock the shutter speed and control the iris,or gain.Anyways these are great fit in your pocket cameras but for me are very limited for video being forced to shoot auto.

Took mine for a test other night, heres one i quickly did to get online

Rise Against Auckland - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQILFnKW6CE
recorded it in 1080p and final cut pro doesnt take the mts file so had to convert it first, so bit of quality lost between getting from original file to youtube..

The sound isnt from the camera, but from my external audio recording.
I was about 5metres away from the stack, so the sound on the camera was good apart from when the bass drum hits it brickwalled, but makes a good reference for lining up external audio, so not too fussed about that.

Also played around taking photos as well... find between about 13x-16x zoom u definately get a bit of noise in the photos, but seems to get hidden in certain colors.
Hope this works

Chrisedge, what is that grip and where did you get it?

I've had it in my camera bag for at least 15 years, so not sure where I got it. But I googled "camera grip" and found a version here:
http://www.thecamerahunter.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=TCH&Product_Code=FLABRKT2SHOE&Category_Code=FL

plus I needed a "Hot Shoe to Tripod" adaptor that I got a Samys.

Any decent Camera shop should have what you need to do this. I saw it on a HX9V blog with a flat flash mount, and the Hot Shoe adaptor.

Just finished a 2 HX9V Cam edit of the Foo Fighters on 10/17/2011. I recorded audio via SP AT933 > Batt Box > M10.

BTW, things I don't like over my ZS3, focusing issues, much harder to change settings, more muted colors ("duller" picture) plus I recorded in the wrong format (1440x1080) but it still looks good...

I have a ZS7 and a HXV9 - and I agree with the "duller" picture description.  However, I have no problems with focusing the HXV9 - it stays nicely in focus while zooming in and out; whereas the ZS7 goes in and out of focus virtually every time I zoom in or out.

Very nice clip of FF.

I think it might have just been the lighting at Foo. Both my camera and my buddies (he's the one in the stands...brand new to filming) would go out at similar times.  I shot the opener at this with my ZS3 and it seemed to have stayed in focus better, but it has issues too. Usually zooming out will quickly fix it ZS3 focus, whereas the HX9V would still sometimes be out of focus when I would try that.

I had to still darken up the HX9V footage, sharpen and boost the colors a bit to make it more vivid. But it's fantastic overall and I got it for a steal so I am happy I bought it.
