Tascam Dr-2d Phanthom Power ????
« on: February 26, 2014, 02:50:49 PM »
Hi my name is scott this is my first post here !
I'm no stranger to taping but recentley i've downsized my recording arsenal to  a tascam dr-2d which is fantastic by the way!!! The built in condenser mics are fantastic and seems to a great job !! But ive noticed when there is stage banter or talking they resonate and are some what distorted >>> so I bought some new mics that are a matched set  behringer c-4 so i got xlr cables that run into one jack that i can plug into the mic jack>>>
My questions are these

Is dr-2d phantom ready?
what should i do in setting when using mics ???
My name is scott medeiros and all the recordings under that name are done with the tascam dr-2d if your interested!!!  (~};)

No, you need something in between the mics and the DR2d to provide 48 volt phantom power. The Tascam only provides a few volts of plug-in power. Either a pre-amp that provides phantom or a dedicated phantom power supply. There are a bunch of options at a broad range of prices.

I own and have used a Denecke PS-2 with a Tascam DR-2D. The PS-2 can be powered with either a 9V battery or a battery pack via an 1/8" Tip/Sleeve input.

Another option to look at is pairing a Naiant Tinybox with your mics and DR-2D. This will give you a a more flexible preamp than the DR-2D's preamp and phantom power for the mics.

This is what I use and i love it. I run Busman bsc1s, and supply them phantom power with a Naiant Tinybox. Works perfectly with the Dr-2d (or really another recorder!)

Sounds like you'll need different cables if you're going to run into a preamp.

Regarding your mismatched mics,

How much are they off? if it's only a few dB then mic positioning/aiming could account for some of it.

If you are talking 6 dB then it could be a bad cable. (6 dB is the difference in signal strength between an unbalanced and balanced cable)

This guy's website says he first recorded the GD in 1992... 22 years later he can't tell if DR2D has phantom power? (or at least read the manual?)

"Arriving late to the Grateful Dead taping scene, I armed myself with a Sony TCD-5 , a couple mini discs, and a couple low grade mics with NO knowledge of how it was done. I headed to Albany in 92' to record my first show. While the quality was less than great, that day began my 22 year journey of music, bootlegs, and incredible experiences."

You haven't learned much in 20+ years have you?
